“Southern charm - wonderful, beautiful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

This is southern charm at its absolute finest. The Jefferson (which refers to Thomas Jefferson, not his rebellious namesake, Jefferson Davis) is the grand old hotel of Richmond, and it works hard to live up to that reputation. The hotel building itself is truly impressive, beautifully restored and maintained, and with an atrium that is absolutely awe inspiring. Our room was well appointed and spacious, the only disappointment being the absence of any kind of a view.

We put the staff to the test in the first hour after arriving, with a lost piece of important luggage and an emergency laundry item, and they were highly responsive, sympathetic and unflappable. The hotel also provides a transport service to places around town, which is convenient and of course saves money on taxis. This was made even more useful by a knowledgeable concierge who could advise on all the interesting places around town, whether Civil War related or not. And we also made use of the swimming pool, which was long enough to do laps in, an unusual luxury in most hotels.

It's hard to believe that the local government intended to pull down the hotel in the 1980s. What an absolute tragedy that would have been.

The hotel is located on the edge of a very pleasant residential district. We didn’t find anywhere local to eat, but there are many nice places in the town itself which the hotel bus ferried us to and from.

Definitely one of the nicest places we’ve ever stayed – really charming and beautiful. The complimentary coffee available in the lobby from early morning was greatly appreciated by these early risers, too - a really thoughtful touch.

By far, the best service of any hotel I've ever stayed in over the last 30+ years of travel (domestic and international). Room accommodations are terrific as are the historic public areas. There were a couple of mis-steps which were quickly and politely handled. Lemaire restaurant (on site) is excellent and breakfast at TJ's (on site) was, also, very good. Not a budget hotel but well worth a visit!

Richmond is a little jewel packed with history, having toured the city, it was so comfortable to return to our large, well decorated room. The hotel's public spaces are divine reminding one of the old south. The staircase evokes memories of Scarlett o'hara's tumble. The shops are lovely , the staff friendly and accomadring.in short, I would definitely recommend a stay at the Jefferson .

Having grown up in Richmond, the Jefferson Hotel always has always been the hotel you refer to visitors or head to for a celebration. While I've enjoyed a few meals and champagne brunches here (always lovely) I never had the chance to stay until our wedding weekend last year. The suite was beautifully appointed and comfortable, just what we hoped for on the big weekend. The suite was spacious enough, with plenty of room for the bridal party to get ready as well. We were greeted with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries after our wedding and room service was quick and attentive after our late night. The big expectations were easily met, but we also enjoyed the tiny details like finding tomorrow's weather report on a notecard by the bed with a few chocolates.

We also booked a block of rooms for our hotel guests and that was an easy process, the staff was always helpful and friendly. Our friends and family loved the experience of staying at the Jefferson, and it made for an easy trip home when our guests gathered at the hotel bar after our reception. They also took advantage of the free shuttle rides to area attractions which made the visit easier for our out of town guests without cars. The Jefferson made a great impression on our visitors and provided a memorable stay for us during a special time. Highly recommend to anyone stopping in Richmond.

We just stayed 2 nights in this pretty hotel. Yes, it is historic, and that is worth paying more for. The public rooms are breathtaking. The staff is friendly to the point of almost over-friendly. The restaurant, LeMaire's was delicious. Why the average rating then?

When we booked our trip - 2 months in advance, they had no standard rooms left, so we splurged on an "executive suite" - we do not mind paying high rates, and are even okay to subsidize the public areas of this lovely place. BUT -- the room - oops suite, there were two rooms - was on the first floor, the windows looked out on a sort of crawl space with stones, and bright lights that they use to light up the lovely stained glass windows in the public areas. It was okay - but the bathroom was a big awkward and cramped for counter space -- and we heard EVERY noise from the corridor. A shame, really.

Also - they send a pre-stay booking form for massages, etc. We like massages and spa things so we booked a couple. They have a nice gym and a great pool - but it is not a day spa, so unless you pay extra for the in-room massage there really is no place to change and no robes. Ladies' locker room was tiny, did have a shower, but you are obligated to bring a robe from your room or re-dress after a nice massage. $85 for 30 minutes and they can't throw in a robe?

Ooh and I did find someone else's dental floss in the bathroom. Like a piece on the floor, not the container.

Room Tip: Don't know - the nice front desk manager told me that "Views are not generally good in Rich...

What a lovely, gracious and beautiful hotel. It is an elegant oasis in downtown Richmond, VA. The architecture, history, and interior decor - with oil paintings of all the presidents who stayed here beginning with Thomas Jefferson - are fascinating. The guest rooms are beautiful and comfortable and the service is excellent. The restaurant Lemaire was outstanding. Seriously 5 stars.

Room Tip: We reserved a deluxe room and were upgraded to a superior king room. Our daughter had a connecting r...

The Jefferson Hotel is a Richmond landmark and deservedly so. Our two-night stay was splendid with an ample, suite-sized room that had a view out on to the city. We experienced most of the hotel's rooms and salons because we were there at a wedding that used a good part of the hotel. Staff was particularly pleasant and engaging, from servers to maids to concierge help. As tourists to Richmond, we particularly enjoyed a free hotel shuttle service that got you to the city's attractions--and back again--for free (we ended up parking our car for two days rather than use it in unfamiliar traffic). To note also: the hotel is quite central and you can walk to a number of city-center sights.
