Thanks so much for your review. I'm so glad that your granddaughter loves our garden. We try to have lots of great activities for kids in the Children's Garden and throughout the entire garden.
I wanted to mention that while we do have 2 restaurants on site here at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden (both with indoor & outdoor dining options) picnicking is not permitted. For more details, you can go to our website and look under the "Plan Your Visit" tab.

Great place for just a quiet, beautiful walk with family while in town. No crowds, no noise, beautiful scenery, etc.

“Winter is Not the Season to Visit”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

We visited in January, when we were in Richmond for an exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Unfortunately, winter is not the best time to visit. The admission fee (in our case, $10 each) is in effect and frankly, it's not worth it. The conservatory is nice, and one room had a beautiful display of blooming plants. However, the orchid display is small compared to many others we have visited. The rest of the gardens are outside and can be seen by walking the trails--there are no access roads for vehicles. If we ever return, it will be during spring or summer to enjoy the outdoors. All the online literature I read beforehand failed to warn visitors that winter is not a good time to visit.

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry you found your mid-winter visit disappointing. Although there is less to see in winter, we do feel that the garden offers year-round beauty. Typically we do offer a winter admission special that runs from mid-January through most of February. It looks like you may have just missed it. If you are thinking of a winter visit, and wondering if we are running a special, you can check our website.
Also, if you are wondering what's in bloom at a particular time of year, we have a great resource on our website listing what's typically in bloom in any given month so you know what blooms to look for during your visit.

“nice place, lots to see”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2014

I think this is a terrific spot, but try to go when the weather's not too hot. You'll want to spend hours exploring all that's on display (such as the amazing selection of pitcher plants, but if the weather's too hot, you'll miss a lot.
I happened to visit when the conservatory was hosting a butterfly exhibit, so that was great fun.

“Beautiful at Christmas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

Each year the garden's puts on a festival of lights. Sounds simple enough doesn't it? It is actually quite grand. It is more than pleasant to walk grounds on a cool winter night in the glow of these beautiful lights, giving you a peaceful yet festive feeling. If your in Richmond the day after Thanksgiving through New Year, you should make the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden one of your stops at night, to get a little holiday feeling going for yourself. They do a really nice job with the garden lighting.
