It is so rare to find a vacation accommodation which truly captures of the "essence of place". Too often, an eclectic and kitsch mixture of style, decor, and appointments poorly reflect the local atmosphere. Handsome architect Antonio and his beautiful vivacious wife, Deb, have the exquisite taste and stylistic expertise to have created Tancamelis. This lovely boutique B & B is the epitome of refinement, capturing in its every detail the very essence of magical Sardinia: from its 360° views of the mind-boggling natural beauty of the typical terrain and gorgeous vegetation to the low key and "right-on" color schemes and appointments chosen throughout in utmost attention to detail. The beautifully kept front garden seems to be all one with the natural terrain, a mere extension of the natural terrain. The charming owners have selected indigenous plants placed with art to enhance... but not to interfere with the natural essence of the island.
The same spirit of natural and real was so very present at breakfast: a lovely local "real food" feast served on the stunning veranda with vast views. Each day began with the spectacular, beautifully presented, delicious, served breakfasts: local fruit, homemade tarts, local fresh ricotta, beautifully sliced organically grown tomatoes with an interesting array of local cheeses. There was daily variety both in what was served and in the artful and quality table-settings. The breakfasts were absolute highlights for us and a magical way to start each day. The beauty of the veranda/breakfast room, its fine appointments, the well-chosen mood-setting music, the original and artistic table settings, the skillful mix of elegant and sophisticatedly rustic appointments were all eloquent testimony to an outstanding and knowing attention to detail...to the absolute perfection of style...and to infinite and impeccable good taste. Nothing in the setting, atmosphere or food was even remotely similar to a standard hotel breakfast!
The natural setting, the carefully planted (in the strictest Sardinia tradition of flora) garden and lawns, the richly varied and stunning macchia mediterranea above the beautiful Marmorata beach went well beyond what we had so hoped for and were the very epitome of serenity and minimalistic beauty. The ever-changing light throughout the day, the sunrises, the breezes, the morning dew on the green lawns truly mesmerized us. All of this, along with the extremely pleasant owners and their genuine welcome, warmth, caring and their time for meaningful conversations have left us with a delicious after-glow and a profound nostalgia.
The Suite Room was airy, spacious, soothing in its knowing decor, with a wonderful walk-in shower and its own veranda/porch. It looks out onto the beautiful and immaculately well-kept garden, the gorgeous typical countryside with Sardinia's famous wind-swept vegetation... and on to the sea. A beautiful beach is a 10-minute stroll or a 2 minute drive with easy/accessible parking.
We are immensely grateful to have found exactly what we were hoping for in Tancamelis - an extremely gracious, small and personal...and very charming... guest house with lovely owners and plenty of privacy! This is truly a find - an idyllic place for an idyllic stay in northern Sardinia.
This is not the place for those who come to Sardinia seeking hype, evening entertainment, in-house hotel dinners, noisy swimming pools, the presence of fashion boutiques next door. Tancamelis is for the traveler...not the tourist. Tancamelis beckons, soothes and enchants the traveler looking for the soul of a magical island. Tancamelis embodies perfectly that very soul, that very essence of magical Sardinia.
