First off, keep in mind this is one of only a couple places in the Boston area where you can get a room for less than $100 a night unless you want to stay at a hostel. So don't go in with any high expectations and you won't be disappointed.
For the past couple years, my family has stayed here whenever we're in town for Red Sox games. It's about a 10 minute walk or a short drive (recommended) to the Alewife T station which is really convenient. And the hotel also has a shuttle service to/from the station that runs during the day.
While the location may look a bit sketchy - sandwiched between a bowling alley/nightclub and a burned out warehouse - the hotel feels safe. The first time I stayed here, our room was still getting cleaned so we were promptly switched to another room, no problems.
The decor definitely looks outdated - some of the bathrooms have bright blue color schemes, others are pink, others are cream-toned - but you can expect to find basic amenities such as a mini-fridge and microwave, shampoo/lotion/soap basket, and cable TV. There is also a continental breakfast in the lobby each morning (toast, bagels, fruit, coffee, tea).
My mother was a bit skeptical of the place. Always the germaphobe, the first thing she did on our first stay was bust out her canister of Clorox wipes and went to town wiping down all the surfaces in the bathroom. To her surprise, the bathroom was quite clean and she's no longer afraid of this hotel.
I'm glad I didn't read the other reviews of this hotel before I first stayed there or I might have been scared away. I noticed no problems with bugs, rodents, etc. as others have mentioned. The rooms I have stayed in have always been clean, pest-free, and comfortable, and the front desk folks have always been pleasant. I've stayed at some pretty luxurious hotels - this is not one of them. But don't hold the against the place - just remember it's one of the cheapest in the area and you need to keep that in mind when you stay here.
