“Excellent location, small, personal feel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

Excellent location. Just a short hop from Harvard Square, Harvard University, the T, Porler Square. Pretty view of the Cambridge Common. My room was quite large but I don't know if that's typical. Beyond size, which was a plus, the room was nothing special, especially for the price, but I was there during a high-demand weekend when rates were probably hiked. The elevators were small and slow but no-big-deal.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Cambridge Common.

The Commander is an older hotel that has been nicely refurbished (except for the elevators that were obviously built for a smaller and slower moving crowd). My room (suite 645) was large, full of windows and a great view of Cambridge. Easy walk to Harvard or the Square.

Very close to Harvard Square and transportation. Excellent desk service, free wireless in room, free use of computers/printers off lobby. Very comfortable bedding. Strong lighting and super-powerful magnifying mirror in surprisingly small and somewhat downbeat bathroom that could use a bit of a re-do. Hair dryer worked well. Overall, very pleased with stay.

This is an older hotel that has not been modernized. I'm surprised at this considering that it now has several more modern, more commodious competitors in the area right around Harvard. It continues to charge as if it is the best and isn't.

My room had the modern "canopy" bed, but it also had ripped 1960s carpet and a bathroom where you couldn't open the door fully because it would hit the toilet. The pipes were noisy, so a neighbor's decision to shower was something I was aware of. Space was at a premium. Fixing some of these structural problems would require a major commitment. My final complaint wouldn't. In a room going for more that $300 would it be so hard to provide glass glasses rather than plastic cups?

Overall, I was disappointed, but more importantly surprised that Sheraton would allow its brand to compete so poorly.

I have stayed at the Commander numerous times over the last 6 years. You can't beat the convenience of the location. It is a few minutes walk to Harvard, Lesley, EDS and the T stop. There are restaurants within a 2 minute walk, including several coffee shops for breakfast. The rooms vary in size, but have always been very comfortable. This most recent visit, the rooms look renovated--cleaner and plusher than I remember from years past. The bedding is wonderful. I also went to the fitness room for the first time, and it was well equipped--very clean, and provided towels, earphones and water. We had breakfast on Sunday at the Nubar, and for brunch in Boston, it was reasonably priced, good food, with excellent service. A friend who lives in Cambridge said she had heard great things about Nubar as well.

This hotel is a classic. The beds are so comfortable; it was like sleeping on a white cloud! The gym area was clean and had excellent equipment. The Nubar Restaurant & Lounge is outstanding. The food was gourmet and the service was exceptional. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the Cambridge area. Cheers!

Room Tip: 103 is directly across from the gym -- very convenient!

My son and I stayed a couple of nights at this venerable Cambridge hotel. He was looking at Harvard, and we wanted to stay walking distance to the College and Square. Having grown up in Boston, I recall the Commander's red sign looming over Radcliffe and Cambridge Common and the image of a standard bearing hotel. I've stayed at the Charles Hotel with my wife, which is lovely, but I wanted to spend less money. The Commander fit the bill. The old hotel has been tastefully refurbished, and the staff was particularly welcoming and accommodating.

Upon our arrival, we were upgraded to a suite. The room was first rate, spacious, well-appointed and chock full of luxurious amenities, such as a flat screen television, heated bathroom floor, and blackout curtains. The beds were very comfortable. The free continental breakfast served on the 6th floor was just fine. The lobby was appointed with a series of PC's. The new exercise room was surprisingly excellent.

The staff was great. We had forgotten a laptop charging cord. When I asked the front desk clerk whether they had a spare cord she said they did not but offered to bring her own cord the next day. The only significant negative was that the hallway on our floor had an awful mildew odor. It was strong enough to encourage us to take the stairs rather than walk down the hall to the elevator. When I checked out, I asked about the source of the odor. The clerk said she had not heard the complaint before, but immediately took off my parking charges without any request from me.

This was a very good hotel that was reasonably priced and perfectly located for a visit to Harvard.
