“Pros & Cons: Sheraton Commander Cambridge versus Sheraton Boston”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2011

If you are SPG members and interested in Cash and Points stays, this review is meant for you. I travel to Boston several times a year and always choose one of these two hotels. They are good value for money and I love the beds. Although we have stayed in both of these hotels numerous times, we stayed at both of them during this past trip to Boston for the weekend and week following memorial day. - We were at the Sheraton Boston for 5 nights and the Commander for 2 nights.
Locations- The Sheraton Boston is attached to the shops and restaurants of the Prudential building, has 3 T stops within a short walk, is near Berkelee School of Music and very close to Boylston and Newberry Streets. It has easy entrance onto the freeway. The Sheraton Commander is in Cambridge near Harvard and has all of the charm of the shops and restaurants of Cambridge. The T stop is a 10 minute walk. Entry on and off the freeway is a little more difficult, but possible. There is a Starbucks in the Lobby.
Rooms - The Sheraton Boston has views and is multi-story with quick elevators and modern rooms. It is huge and a typical conference center hotel. The toiletries in the room are minimal. The corner suites are very spacious and modern. Rooms are similar. The Sheraton Commander is in a character filled older building, but is completely remodeled and very nice. Elevators are quirky. Toiletries are better and more plentiful. My daughter says their rollaway beds are far more comfortable as well. Air conditioning can be very noisy. No views. The rooms are spacious and very nice. I have stayed in 3 different styles (King, Double & Suite) over the years. The Suites have two bedrooms and a living room which is wonderful for families.
Service - Parking at the Sheraton Boston is expensive. Service is mayhem and can be very slow. Front desk is helpful. We had to request a rollaway 4 times. Once by email. Once by phone. Once when we arrived. Once with housekeeping and 8 hours later from the front desk. 5 days and they never put in towels for 3 people! The pool is nice but no attendant means towels everywhere and wild kids. The gym had a lot of kids 10-14 every morning. The bar was a total disappointment. 3 of the drinks we asked for on the cocktail list were not available. Service was sad and no one seemed to know what they were doing on the 4 times we went to the bar. The Sheraton Commander has a parking attendants next to the hotel making retrieving your car (especially for early morning flights) easy. Parking is nearly half the price of the Sheraton Boston. The service at the Commander is better in every way. The front desk is bright and informed. The bar is far far nicer and very accommodating. The room had towels for 3 people and the rollaway when we arrived. They were clearly professionals and since the remodel it is a nice place to sit. Which is the better hotel? They both have their pluses and it really depends what you plan to do. Location is quite different, but the T makes this a minor issue. Service is far better at the Commander. Rooms are both nice, except for the view.

I have stayed at this hotel twice in the last two months and would do it again. While walking up, I was a bit taken aback given its large florescent sign. Nonetheless, the inside is quaint and comfy. The elevator is a little small, but that should be expected in a historic hotel. If anything, I count that as a plus for style rather than a negative for inconvenience. Logistically, you are situated right next to Harvard's campus and less than a 10 minute walk to the "T" (metro/subway). Takes 40-60 minutes to get to the airport (and only costs $2) on public transit. Nearby restaurants are fine, but I would go into Boston for a treat. Atmosphere and staff are superb. Free internet and printing is a definite plus. Also don't think I have slept so soundly in a long time. Beds are extremely comfortable and no light can penetrate their tapestry curtains.

We had a wonderful experience at this hotel! Everything was excellent. The staff was very attentive and helpful. I had to stay connected to the internet for a business purpose after we checked out and they actually set me up in a private meeting room with unlimited connectivity. The restaurant was also excellent and reasonably priced. We recommend highly.

Recently spent one night here while looking at colleges during Spring Break. Sheraton Commander is an easy walk to Harvard College, Harvard Yard, and Harvard Square. Hotel room looked like a bedroom in an old home. Quite charming. Large room, small bathroom, but clean as a whistle. Free WiFi. Parking was valet only and an additional $29. Walked to dinner at Legal Sea Foods in Harvard Square and along the Charles River to walk it off! Pleasantly surprised that a 'chain' restaurant was so good. Definitely exceeded expectations. Walked to L.A. Burdick in the morning for lattes/pastries. One word - YUM! Used points, but would stay here again with/without points.

Great location. Great bar. Great staff. Nice room. Everything good - except - the AC. Like a roaring vacuum cleaner. You can't open the windows so if you sleep fine with stale air you'll be good. Otherwise prepare for little sleep as the AC will keep you up. Total bummer. Nothing not to like bout this hotel but when you can't sleep - and you can't get any fresh air - that's a deal breaker....

I stayed here when I needed to do some research at Harvard. It was great to be within walking distance of the campus, good food and great coffee. The room was very comfortable and well planned given that it was small. They have free printing downstairs which was great as well as free wifi in the rooms. Big plus! The bed was comfy and the black out curtains helped a lot. The only tiny draw back was the fitness room is small and there was a line for the equipment by the time I left. When I got there at 6:15 there was only one machine left. I think a bigger space is in order.

this year, my husband and i didn't get on the ball in time to get a good rate at a hotel near the finish line for the boston marathon, so we wound up staying across the river in cambridge at the sheraton and enjoyed our experience very much. it was nice to see a different part of the city, and there are a bunch of good, reasonably-priced restaurants within a 5-10 minute walk of the hotel! we enjoy taking the t but were also glad to have a car for being able to get around the city more directly, as there is just one t-route into boston, and cab rides are pretty pricey. hotel appeared to be renovated recently...lobby was really pretty, bar/restaurant area was very nice, and our rooms were great as well. elevator was a little small (really narrow door), and bathrooms in rooms were small as well, but i guess that's normal for an older building. bathroom in lobby was really nice! fitness center was small, but there are nice running/walking trails close by. the hospitality was great! when we got back from the race, they had snacks and massages available for the runners, which was so nice, and as we were leaving, we noticed cupcakes and coffee/tea in the lobby for guests (didn't have one but they looked delicious!). overall, we were very pleased, and the rate was great for marathon weekend!!
