“Claustrophobic Coffin”

A Cambridge House B & B Inn

I would just reiterate the views of others below. Make sure you double check your reservation and get precise details about which room you are allocated.

I was, similarly, in an annexe, although not the modern one mentioned by someone else. I really could not believe it when I was taken down an entire flight of stairs to a basement. The room had only skylight windows and very little natural light. Low ceiling. It was gloomy, oppressive and claustrophobic. The decor was ok, I guess, if you like chintz. I asked to be moved as I cannot bear not having light or at least some kind of view. I argued politely with the somewhat dazed girl on the front desk but nothing do...no change possible at all. Miserable. I arrived after a long day of work in Providence and instead of rest felt instantly uncomfortable and left to go for a long walk along Mass Avenue. Not exactly an inspiring location.

Agree about the breakfast too...mean and mediocre.

Couldn't wait to get out of the place.

Plus: bed was fairly comfortable and there was free internet access from the parlour at a rather refined desk.

We do have a few rooms on the split level of our properties--Half basement rooms with one or two windows above ground. Those rooms are nicely decorated with very comfortable queen size beds, private bath and working gas fireplaces. When the upper lever rooms are all booked, we always inform guests they will stay at split-level rooms before reservation to avoid any unexpectation. Also, guests can always get a favor on the rate compared to booking other rooms. However, during the busy season, once your room is booked, there is less chance to upgrade your room unless we get a last minute cancellation.

“Deceptive Website, Very Disappointing”

A Cambridge House B & B Inn

My husband and I booked 2 nights at A Cambridge House based on the recommendations of the folks at A Friendly Inn at Harvard Square and after seeing the lovely rooms on the website. We paid $179 per night plus 12 % tax and anticipated a Victorian experience. Upon our arrival we were told that our room was "next door" - later, I noticed this also on my confirmation, but had been given no communication as to what that meant or a choice. We came to find out that "next door" is a modern condo that has been cut up into rooms. Our room had a huge empty kitchen ( no use to us ), a tiny shower- only ( obviously second ) bathroom and a bed - no headboard - placed squarely in what was designed to be a dining or living area - one wall was all glass doors with flimsy curtains. No bedside tables - only lamp tables, but the lamp and the clock radio could not both be plugged in at once (!). The only chairs were 2 hard wooden desk chairs. Almost bare walls. In short, no atmosphere or amenities - a far cry from the Victorian rooms that they advertise. The walls were paper thin - we were awakened constantly by footsteps, talking, laughing, sneezing - you name it. We were assured that we could take advantage of the parlor next door and of course, breakfast, but it meant going outside to get there and quite frankly, we felt like outcasts. Who wanted to go have conversation with the "luckier" patrons whose rooms were in the Victorian? For all of this, we paid the same price! When we complained, we were told that they may need to "work on " their communication regarding the condo setup. I feel that they don't tell you because of just this situation - busy weekend in Cambridge and no where else to go. They get your money and that's all that matters to them. We felt completely duped and would never recommend or stay here again.

The above guests made their reservation in the last minutes during the busy weekend of Tufts Commencement. The Victorian guests rooms are always fully booked months ago during special events and busy weekends. The townhouse is our newly renovated guests rooms with hotel style setting. Some of the guests do prefer townhouse over main house, since the rooms are very bright, sunny and spacious, also microwave and refrigators in each room. Two rooms have full kitchen which are very convienient for guests who stay longer time. Other than decor, both townhouse and main/carriage house have very similar amenities, in term of size of bathroom, beds, furnitures etc. We understand some guests prefer the Victorian experience, but it's not fair to debase townhouse just because someone doesn't like it.

Before guest making reservation, staffs always inform guests if they are going to stay at next door townhouse, so as the email confirmation. We never just put guests into those rooms without notice.

Although, we believe the townhouse is as good as Victorian main/ carriage house, if any guests prefer staying at Victorian rooms, please make your reservations earlier.

We recently spent a weekend in Boston and decided to stay at this B&B primarily because of the pictures on the website and positive comments. We were expecting a lovely inn, which it is, and a gracious, welcoming environment which it was thanks to the daytime innkeeper Ellen (the night attendant was totally disinterested in seeing to it that we were comfortable), but also a lovely New England breakfast to start our day of sightseeing. What we got was paper plates & cups, cold eggs, danish and dry cereal served as a "help yourself". For the rate per night, we paid 189.00+, it was a huge disappointment. The new owners need to understand the difference between ordinary rooming house and B&B in the fine New England tradition set by the previous owner.

“A change not for the better”

A Cambridge House B & B Inn

Looking forward to my return trip to A Cambridge house, something I have enjoyed many times, I found it very disappointing. I came back to unfamiliar faces and many changes regarding atomophere and breakfast. Apparently the Inn was recently bought out this past July and many of the unique things changed but not for the better. I could still see the beauty in the INN, but on arrival I realized it wasn't the same. I arrived late ....and was greeted by a sweet woman at their front desk area. Unfortunetly there seemed to be a language barrier..she spoke very little english and was hard to understand. They couldn't find my reservation. I told them I had made it several months ago and I had been a repeat guest for many years. This time I had booked one of their "romantic 4-poster bedded rooms with fireplace" for my boyfriend and I. She was very nice but tried to tell me I didn't have a reservation but she could give me a full size-bedded room in the "lower level" (basement) and a $20.00 per night discount. I informed her that this is unacceptable (almost in tears at this point) and I wanted the Waverley Room room I reserved. To make a long story short, the lower level room was all they had and I either had to take or leave it. When I asked to speak with the owners she told me they were on vacation for a week and could not be reached. I do have to give her some credit, she refered me to the Mary Prentiss Inn, 5 minutes away. She called them and they had a beautiful, romantic room available for the same price. In the end it all worked out...I got engaged at the Mary Prentiss Inn!!! The other thing that I wanted to mention is ...I called the Inn back a few weeks later to speak with the owners in regard to my experience...another woman at the reservations desk told me.."they are on vacation for a week and can't be reached". Get the picture?

“Over rated”

A Cambridge House B & B Inn

We stayed at A Cambridge House in July. Our room was dripping with atmosphere, but was so small we could hardly move. There were no drawers to put things, only a tiny wardrobe. The bathroom was pathetic. The drawers stuck and wouldn't open. It was dark and dreary. The breakfasts were adequate but all in all not a great experience.
