“All you need within walking distance!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2012

It had been some time since we had been to Harvard Square. This modern, clean hotel had everything you need close by. Some rooms a bit noisy, but overall a great experience. Beds very comfortable and bath/shower area large enough with a built in TV in the mirror! Great places to eat are all in walking distance and the Rialto bar and restaurant are right in the hotel, along with Henritta's table for breakfast. This was a weekend getaway for us and it was just perfect!

This exceptionally well run hotel is in the heart of Harvard Square in Cambridge,Ma. They have three very good restaurants on premises ( Henriettas Table is my favorite), and they have a great roof top health spa and pool, underground parking and its central to Harvard U., and is only 2 blocks from the "T" Subway Train on the Red Line ( first subway in the USA), which is easy to navigate and inexpensive ( passes for more than a days usage available inside the Harvard Sq. station.Downtown Boston is only 4 stops away, and if you are on the right side of the train you'll get great views of the Charles River and Boston skyline as you emerge from underground. ( close to MIT).
It's not an inexpensive hotel, but you get what you pay for, and this hotel is wonderful, the concierges are very talented.

Traveled here with my wife (she had to go to Boston area for business) and I tagged along. Her employer picked up the tab for the room for the week, so that's why I rated in the middle for value. I heard but can't confirm that our room's regular rate was around $350/night. And while it is a nice hotel in a great area, that still seems steep to me. The building doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside is a nice mix of old and new. The rooms are updated, spacious and have very nice amenities: big & comfy bed, nice tv, tv in bathroom mirror, free wi-fi. The staff was also very courteous and professional.
Perhaps the best part might is its location. It is just a short walk to the T station and right around the corner from all the action in Harvard Square. There's plenty of eating, shopping and socializing all within steps of the front door.
It's hard for me to say much since the room was fully paid for, but the staff and the hotel made me feel at home while was there and I couldn't have asked for a better location in Cambridge. I hope everyone has as satisfying an experience as I did.

Perfect location, everything is within walking distance in Harvard Sq. The entire staff, front desk, valet, and bell men were friendly and extremely helpful. For an upscale hotel, the spa is surprisingly reasonable. The room was clean, of a good size, and the tv in the bathroom mirror actually comes in handy. On Tuesdays there's usually specials for the room rates.

Upon checking into the hotel on December 16th I asked the concierge the name of the new pub/tavern in the Square. The concierge had no idea which was surprising considering the popularity of Russell House.

I parked my car across the street in a handi-cap accessible spot. I had even moved my car to what I thought was a more secure area of Harvard Square. The door man and valet drivers saw me come and go. Signage was up but not clear that cars would be towed after midnight 00:01 Hours of the 17th. This was due to the subway being down for maintenance. No one at the Hotel directly across the street cautioned, you may not wish to park there as Transit Maintenance is set for the next morning.

The next morning the transit police saw a out of country plate and went into the hotel to inquire whether a guest was with their establishment. HE was told NO. The man was very nice and felt badly that the Hotel could not be bothered to search their computer registry with my address in their database.

Well a cab ride, tow fees added up to near 200 dollars and a lost two hours with a 8 hour drive ahead that day.

You know my expectation of a 4 star may seem high but when the transit police actually go into the establishment and the front desk can't be bothered well....you are not getting 4 star service at all...an average gas jockey would be more helpful to their patrons.

Spoke with Mr. ATTia GM and he feels he cannot police the street even though the police came off the street to speak to him about a guest, but not a valued guest.

Room Tip: All rooms are good so long as they don't let in Partys, which happened on another stay and they...

No matter how many times I stay at the Charles Hotel, I still love the TV in the mirror in the bathroom. This is a great little hotel -- staff are nice, location is fabulous. The rooms are very clean, but dark -- hard to work because light isn't really sufficient -- and not huge. The Harvard chairs are a nice touch, but they aren't all that comfortable (though the shams on the bed fit nicely). Restaurant and bar are great spaces and they keep upgrading the public areas of the hotel, which means that some of the passe technology in the rooms (web TV? computerized metal keys rather than key cards) is a little strange. Very comfortable bed. Definitely recommend.
