Owner description: Founded in 1831, this is the first cemetery in the United States modeled after the idyllic, late-18th century landscape gardens of England's upper class. The 175-acres of land, located in both Cambridge and Watertown, is a horticulturist's dream and still handles up to 650 burials each year.

“Fascinating, but a navigational challenge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

Some amazing historical, scholarly, or cultural celebs buried there, and some very lovely grounds and monuments. Get the guide and map at the visitors' center near the entrance. You can drive in and park, but note carefully where you can and cannot leave the car. Two warnings: it's very hilly, with many of the celeb markers hard to find; and the map you get is unwieldy and doesn't always seem to match up with where you are. It's on the 71 or 73 bus lines from Harvard sq. if you don't want to drive.

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

More a park than a cemetery, a lake, impressive array of flora, peaceful and beautiful. It's so huge a car is advised to visit it.

“It's more than a cemetery feels like Europe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

The cemetery has walking and audible tours that are terrific, many of the older tombstones are works of art. There are ponds, footpaths, a tower, and magnificent trees to see.
