“Middle of Everything, but Close to Nothing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2011

I chose this hotel because it had a conference rate that was less than half the going rate of other hotels in the area. If it weren't for the low price, I certainly would have looked elsewhere because of its location. The main drawback to this hotel is the location. It's one of those places that's right in the middle of everything but close to nothing. It's about a 15 minute walk to the closest T stops, which in a city like Boston where want to drive as little as possible, makes it a bit out of the way. Also, it's about a 15-20 minute walk from MIT, Harvard and BU. They offer a shuttle for $5/person to take you to the T stop and other nearby places, but that seems like a rip-off (if you have a few people, it would be cheaper and probably faster to just take a cab).

Otherwise, the hotel itself is great. I arrived off a redeye and the front desk staff checked me in at 9:30 AM without a problem. The room was clean; the bed was comfortable. It was on the 12th floor and had great view of Boston and Cambridge. There was a small refrigerator in the room, which is nice to have. The exercise room was quite small (only 4 machines, some weights and very little room for stretching), but the hotel is located right on the river, which a great place to get out for a run.

I received coupon for the breakfast buffet when I checked in, so I tried that one morning. It has a good selection of hot and cold items, including a made to order omelet station. However, at $16.95, it's a bit pricey (as most hotel breakfast buffets are). There's a few good food options within a short distance, including a Trader Joe's, Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks.

I flew into Boston pretty early and called to ask if I could leave my bags while I did some sightseeing. Ended up being able to check-in relatively early. Plus one in my book!

Rooms were clean and comfortable. Had a great view of the city. I took advantage of many of the amenities, and they were more than adequate. Free Internet is always a plus. Didn't eat at the restaurant or eat any breakfast..a nearby Trader Joes and Dunkin Donuts would be all I need to get some cheap eats.

The hotel is about a twenty minute walk from the nearest T-Line station. It wasn't a big deal at all to walk, especially since we could see so many more things while walking. Unfortunately, at the end of the day when you've walked so much and your feet hurt like crazy, there's no real good way to get to the hotel without having to suffer the consequences. Yeah, there's always a taxi, so this is probably what I deserve for trying to be cost-efficient.

Ended up having to use the business office. Only complaint was that the connection was slow and I timed out several times. Pool is on the 5th floor and didn't seem super clean (I'm picky about pools) and the chlorine odor was overpowering.

Again, there's still too much good to outweigh the bad and I'd definitely stay again if given the chance, but only if I can stay for free. It is by no means worth the "daily price" that can be found through the website.

I wouldn't say that this is the best Marriott I have stayed in, but overall, the job was done. The location was good, as we were doing most of our stuff on that side of the city. The rooms were ok. Standard Marriott. However, the room we were in, was next to the linen room and apparently every rooms pipe ran through our walls. Whenever someone flushed or showered, we could hear it.

The two turns off I had was the fact that we were going to be charged $34 a night for parking. We just paid almost $500 for a room, just include the parking fee in there. We were lucky enough to have it waived (not because we asked), but the fact that it was initally brought up was a bit annoying. Also, a continental breakfast would have been nice considering the cost of the hotel. Only rooms with king sized beds face the Charles River.

We visited Boston to see the sites while visiting family in the area. The staff at Marriott Cambridge were exceptionally kind to our family while dining together, brought extra blankets, rollaway bed, pillows and upgraded us to an upper-level room with a great view of Boston. The on site Starbucks was very convenient and it is within walking distance of the transit system as well as a couple of other cute places to eat. We would definitely stay here again and would recommend.

Room Tip: View of the Boston area is beautiful.

Stayed here during the renovation, and it was really really rough. Noise noise noise...and you had to really wrangle with the front desk crew to get a somewhat decent room.
The rooms are fairly small, but nice. Views of the water and Boston across the river are nice. Windows are so strong you don't hear the traffic under your nose at all. Bathrooms are nice. The little dressing/vanity area between bathroom and sleeping area is nice. Good beds.
The problems, however, that should be noted:
TERRIBLE location in terms of public transportation and overall being "in" the city.
Yes, it overlooks the Charles, and yes, Boston's right across the river-- but the location is really off the beaten track, and the hotel's 'shuttle' service to get to the subway/T underscores the point that it's out of the way and away from the action. Overnight parking on the street you can find- but you have to get to your car at 8 AM to start feeding quarters into the meter-- otherwise it's pricey parking at the hotel. Staying in Cambridge in Harvard Square is one thing-- that really is right in the middle of things-- this location, on Memorial Drive (the highway), and some blocks from MIT is NOT. That's something to be taken into account and can have an effect on your trip.

The hotel was renovated 3 years ago, so this is by far the nicest and cleanest Courtyard I've been to. And probably one of the most memorable stays I've had in the last few years of travels! Everything has been updated: flat screen t.v., new beds, FREE WI-FI, FREE BUSINESS CENTER, FREE COFFEE 24HRS, Japanese restaurant, breakfast restaurant - this hotel has so much amenities, I don't know why it isn't considered a Marriott.

There is a Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and several restaurants surrounding the hotel. Harvard Square and Central Square are but a few minutes walk. They also provide a shuttle for only $5 per day that can take you to so many places in Cambridge. And just a little secret that I would usually keep to myself - talk to the shuttle driver because he may drop you off at a location in Cambridge that isn't on their list of drop-offs.

The airlines had lost my bag and the front desk was so helpful and genuinely concerned about the comfort of my trip that they gave me all of the complimentary items they had, as well as a few necessities from their market (which there's a cost for, but they let me have them). It really made things so much easier since the airlines wasn't going to pay for anything - thanks a lot American Airlines! I was at the hotel for only 3 nights and the staff were familiar with me and were consistently very kind and very personable. They also know the area, so grab some maps and you can book some tours through them!

The food at hotels is usually expensive and not really that good to begin with, but my friends and I were drawn to both the breakfast menu and the menu at the Japanese restaurant and the food was really good! It was a little steep, but definitely worth the money.

So, thank you so much for making my stay so great!

We stayed here one night using an earned free night. This is an older (80's?) property in a very lovely location on a bend in the Charles River just across from bridges to Boston and Alston in a very safe neighborhood. We asked for and received an upper 15th floor room facing the Charles with the Boston cityscape in the distance (room 1514), and, day and night, it was quite spectacular. Were given an early check-in and stayed until the 12 noon checkout next day. The king bed room is a little on the small side, but was well proportioned and had the necessary updated amenities. The bath again was on the small side but in excellent condition (except the venting, which kept the mirror fogged until manually wiped). The water quality and water pressure were great. Front desk staff and housekeeping were very friendly and helpful with our requests. Parking overnight costs $30, pretty steep, but it is next to hotel and covered, and seemed inexpensive considering that we weren't spending the $300 rack rate on the room. There is a small fridge in the room which we used for snack and beverage items obtained from a Trader Joe's right next door. Starbucks is also right there, and a Whole Foods Market and Rite Aid pharmacy are less than a 5 minute walk. You can walk along the Charles River and watch the crew boats practicing as Boston University is right across the river and Harvard and MIT about a 10 minute walk. Fenway Park is a 20 minute walk and took in a Red Sox game while there. Bus and taxi service is right there too if you aren't up to the walk (which crosses the BU bridge affording an excellent river view of Boston). If paying full rate to stay at this property, you might shop around for alternatives, but if you have the points or other earned free night and want to enjoy yourself, this place is highly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor facing the Charles River and Boston skyline. We had 1514.
