“Beautiful setting, great staff!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

'A truly beautiful golf course from the moment you step through the front gates, it must be one of the only in the world that you can see all 18 holes from the club house. We flew into Ciampino airport and it was just a 10 minute transfer. We didnt drink much or eat in the restaurant as we headed out into Rome, although we did have a few beers after golf. Transfer into Rome costs about 80 Euros each way, but between 6 it didnt work out too bad. The course itself plays well with something for all abilities. On the Saturday of our trip there was a decent sized competition, the buggies we had reserved werent available, so we reluctantly walked, on the 6th hole the chairman of the course caught up with us and apologised saying that we could pick buggies up for the back nine at no charge (buggy hire is 40 Euros), he also let us join in the free buffett for the competition afterwards which we though was excellent customer service. We also hired a few sets of clubs and they were quite good (Wilson Staffs, quite new and 25 euros). The hotel attached to the course is in need of some investment, but what it lacks for in mod cons its makes up for in spectacular balcony views and classic Italian character. The one/two bedroom apartments are set just out from the club itself really give it a nice feel. YourGolfTravel got us such a great deal that i was somewhat doubtful about what we were going to get when we arrived, but it exceeded all expectations, overall an 8/10.

Party of golfers - medium to high handicaps. The location is slightly remote but once you get there, the views are spectacular. The resort rooms are basic but large, fairly comfortable and adequate. Our room had a decent sized balcony with far reaching views. If you have a hire car you can park right outside your room which is convenient. Flights from nearby Ciampino airport start from around 7am so there is the potential for some disturbance of sleep. There is a short walk down (or up) from the annexe style appartments to the restaurant and reception. The hotel staff are very helpful and friendly. We didn't use the restaurant for dinner, breakfast was good quality but a little meagre, ok for a few days though. The bar closes at 8pm but the prices of the beer were 4.5 euros for a large one which was good value. Therefore, one is either confined to quarters or forced to venture out thereafter, no bad thing in either case if you are prepared. We went out to local restaurant Arte e Vino in Castelgandolfo centre which was very good. If you are heading into Rome you need to be mindful that the local train station, which is only 10 minutes away (Pavona), runs an infrequent train service so beware of the timetable. The train journey into Rome centre takes about 25 minutes and is only about 2 euros. Allow time to park near Pavona station as the car parks can be full. Another station Pomezia is only 4k away and also worth considering.
The golf course plays quite long and there is an exhausting hike uphill when you have finished playing. We visited during early May and the tees, greens and fairways were in good condition. The bunkers were awful though. There had been a few thunderstorms before and during our stay but that didn't affect the bunkers on other courses we played the same week. The bunkers at Castelgandolfo were unplayable due to hard sand and full of water requiring some extensive works or filling in. This place could be amazing but serious investment would be needed. Would stay there again though, one has to bear in mind that this propery is very old, charming, different, is not purpose built and that should be appreciated. The golf course was fun and a good challenge although I would recommend not playing the course each day, try courses elsewhere also. The staff were great.

The staff is more than excellent every point if contact and they don't even work for the same company - the hotel is separate from the restaurant that is separate from the golf club but the staff act as one! The service level is higher then at five star top hotel in Asia or the US and they are so friendly and so nice - a truly great experience. Food is fantastic, the golf course challenging and beautiful but the rooms - urghhhh
Room standard hostel style, beds hard as rocks, no water pressure so impossible to wash long hair and poorly decorated - very depressing. The view from the terraces are stunning so is the setting and the pool area too. We would love to come back here many times if we can sleep somewhere else.

Good points - lovely staff, lovely views over golf course.

BAD POINTS: Nothing at all like the description given by the golf tour operator. Shabby, tired, not a proper hotel resort. Golf hire equipment terrible, course really bad condition. All in all a very expensive resort for what you are getting. Pool closed as well.

My wife and I booked a golf vacation through Master Golf IT and we specified that we wanted to stay at Castelgandolfo based on their literature. I will say the site is lovely, the course sits in a volcanic crater and is beautiful at sunrise. The course is okay but I am glad we scheduled ourselves to play at three other courses which I highly recommend -- Golf National (Le Querce). Olgiata, and Circolo del Golf di Roma Acquasanta. We rented a car for the week so these courses ranged from 35 minutes to 50 minutes away.

There was no air conditioning (not uncommon in Europe), WIFI only in the main club house, and no English speaking stations on the television. However, the staff was exceptional. They truly appeared to want their guests to have an enjoyable time.

The breakfast was good. The luncheon and dinner meals were great -- however dinner was not served on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

Once we had recovered from the realisation that the tour operator had oversold this resort as 4* accommodation, we settled down to enjoy our stay.
The staff could not do enough to make our stay with them enjoyable. They were very helpful and attentive. Top marks to them.
This is a remote location, with a golf course. We were lucky enough to be there in the run up to a National Junior Open and so the course was in really good condition, except for the bunkers which lacked sand. Only 6 electric trolleys, so book early to avoid disappointment as the course is long.
The views from every balcony are spectacular, overlooking the whole golf course, to the sea in the far distance. Truly wonderful. Rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean, but a little basic with no tea/coffee making facilities. The accommodation is a 5 minute, uphill stroll from the clubhouse, over cobbled roads, so come prepared.
The restaurant is only open in the evenings from Thursday until Sunday, so if planning a short golfing trip, this is when to go. Lunches are served from the bar every day. The food is good, and not expensive, likewise the wine. Breakfast is continental, and we would like to have seen more variation.
There are many good restaurants in Castel Gandolfo itself, the only problem being that they are a 10 minute drive away by taxi. If you are driving, you will need nerves if steel, as some of the roads are narrow and twisting and the Italians love their speed!
This is not a modern day spa golf resort, but it has its own charm with glimpses of former day grandeur, hence to only average scoring. We really began to relax here and found it hard to leave. We would be happy to return for a short golfing trip, when the restaurant was open, so that we could just play golf in the morning, relax in the sun during the afternoon and and then dine in the restaurant every evening whilst enjoying a very reasonably priced bottle of local Frascati or Prosecco.

The golf resort is in receivership. Its ownership group owes over 300,000,000 euros. The staff hasn't been paid in 6 months. Course, equipment, "suites" are all in bad condition. Golf buggies and electric trolleys break down frequently. Suites are located quite a long walk from the reception building where breakfast is served. The restaurant is only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and for Sunday lunch. It is an expensive taxi ride to get into Castel Gandolfo to the nearest restaurants. The bar is only open for limited hours (closes at about 7 pm, maybe 8 pm, if you are lucky).

Despite all these negatives, the staff are trying hard to make things as pleasant as possible. The location is pretty and the course is challenging. Were it not for these things, my rating would have been TERRIBLE, not POOR. Restaurant, when open, is quite good and reasonably priced (especially when you'll need to add about 10 euros/person minimum for a taxi ride to the nearest alternative).
