I wondered whether 5 stars was too much when I started writing this review. But when one compares hotels across Iceland, the Ranga deserves to take the edge. The rooms are larger than average, with a beautiful bathroom. We stayed in the new wing, so everything was new as well. This hotel has a personality which is welcoming by the traveller a little tired of entering the same kind of room everywhere else. The location is convenient for Route 1 and the views by the river highly relaxing.

We used the restaurant where we enjoyed a good meal. Breakfast was also equally good. I would certainly go back there again.

The room was a reasonable size with a good sized bathroom, with a large corner bath complete with lots of bathroom accessories together with plenty of clean towels daily. Excellent controllable radiators, great for drying out wet clothes. We had 3 full days of rain! The room overlooked the rear of the hotel, and close to one of the hot tubs, and veiws over the river.

The dining was OK, rather quality than quantity, but by UK standards expensive, allow about
£85 per couple for a main course, a bottle of house wine, and coffee. Breakfast was a large choice of cold meats and fruits, but very good.

The staff extremely polite and helpful. Would recommend it if you are not on a tight budget.

Beautiful hotel, fabulous room (we stayed in superior room No. 1), room was very clean, comfortable, but eat dinner elsewhere - the food was extortionately expensive, highly pretentious and tinny portions. We left hungry. There were lots of very raudy groups disturbing dinner. The Arhus restaurant/campside in Hella has good, tasty food at reasonable prices at a lovely view. Overall a beautiful hotel, but eat dinner somewhere else.

We were lucky to get a last minute booking at the Hotel Ranga. Originally, we planned to stay in R-vik and bus to the south coast to the see the sights. That would have been a mistake. It was much better to stay closer to the spectacular sights in the south. What a find! The atmosphere reminded us of a fine hotel at a U.S. national park. The food was sophisticated and nicely presented. The menu offered exotic meats such as reindeer and ptargiman. The hotel is off the beaten path surrounded by open grassy fields and a winding river that snakes around the back of the building. There's even an outdoor hottub. The heated towel rack was excellent both for towels and for damp clothes. We would have stayed an extra night, and were disappointed that it was unavailable. Can't wait to go back!

Very nice place. Wooden lodge style hotel. Staff is friendly and very helpful. Bathroom is huge and room looked out onto a small river. Restaurant is top-notch - recommend the Iceland Surf and Turf - and they even had my favortie brand of Scotch in the bar upstairs. Will go back.

We enjoyed our stay at the Ranga. Ok, the rooms are pretty small, but that seems to be normal in Iceland. But the restaurant and the location around the hotel make up for the cosy rooms. Furthermore, the hotel is conveniantly located for most of the major sight in the south of Iceland, including the Westmaenner Islands. Do take a day to go out there!

We stayed at the Hotel Ranga in November for 2 nights and it's a perfect time of year to visit.

Our room was warm and cosy with a great bathroom and although it overlooked the car park turned out not to matter at all beacuse that was the side of the hotel the northern lights were visible from so we could view them in the comfort of our own room.

The hotel was beautifully decorated for Christmas and in the evening served a buffet which was delicious.

The staff were really helpful and friendly. They called our car hire company for us when we had a bit of trouble with our car, they took time out in the busy restaurant to explain all the food, the chef came and spoke to us and in the evening they checked the satelitte to show us the best place and time to see the northern light. They even turned off the car park lights to make sure we got the best possible view.

The hot tubs were great fun in the evening with a glass of wine in the freezing temperatures.

If your looking for fresh air, peace and quiet, great food then we'd really reccomed the Hotel Ranga.

  • Liked — Cosy, romatic Christmas feel
  • Disliked — It is remote so there is no other choice of dining without a drive.
