“Elegant hotel with prices to match”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

We stayed at Ranga for one night at the beginning of our trip to Iceland and were impressed with the helpful service at the reception (perhaps the female owner?). On our request, we were allowed to change rooms from the parking-lot side to the river-view side with a nice patio and hot tub right in front of our patio (there are 3 or 4 such tubs along the back side of the hotel and don´t seem to be crowded). Rooms are simple, rustic, smallish, but clean with a good bed and nice bedding. No safe in the room. Bath robes are supplied.
There was a happy hour in a very comfortable upstair lounge with beer at half price.
For dinner,we were welcomed to the elegant dining room by the male owner and seated at a very nice table near the window with a great view. We felt so great about it that we ordered a bottle of wine (overpriced as in all Icelandic restaurants) to enjoy with our excellent food (fresh fish). Service was very polished and competent.
Breakfast was served in the same bright dining room with a wide selection of foods for every taste and diet.
Hotel Ranga was one of the few exceptions that did not have large groups and was therefore peaceful for individual travellers. We learned later about the disruptive impact of large groups in many hotels and even guesthouses and farm accomodations, that marginalize individual travellers, and I will point that in my reviews of specific hotels.

Room Tip: Ask for the riverside room, they are quiet and have nice view (can watch swans and other birds at th...

We were so looking forward to finishing off our travels in Southern Iceland at the Hotel Ranga. The hotel looked lovely on the website, had great reviews on Trip Advisor, so didn't think twice about the high cost to make it a special evening.
Everything started well. We had a friendly reception and were delighted to be told we were getting an upgraded room (in all of our years of travel, we have never been spontaneously upgraded). Our room was fantastic, fabulous view and very spacious...with an Asian theme (not really what we had come to Iceland for, but it was well done :).
It all turned over dinner, which was to be the highlight dinner of our trip. We started with wine at the bar and lounge (lovely) and were seated right by the window (perfect) and we were seated in front of a woman and perhaps her son. She relentlessly asked questions about the menu and, as any good wait staff would do, answered them to his best ability. But then it became increasingly distracting and exceptionally loud. She was asking questions about the area, Iceland in general and the waiter was offering in-depth and long answers in a very loud voice. It became apparent that the staff were attempting to impress this woman. The owner came around which was a nice touch and actually look his chair and sat with this woman. It was loud, it was distracting and it ruined our experience!!!!!!!! I cringe when I saw our VISA bill and the cost of our "special" and interrupted meal.
In an effort to impress this person, it infringed on our experience. Perhaps if this woman was so important, she needed a private dining area, to meet one on one.
Unfortunately, this place seemed perfect but our experience wasn't. If you are "special" you might have a better time. Not worth the price for the little people.

Together with my wife we celebrated her 50th. birthday at this great hotel. This is probably one of the best four star hotel in the world and for sure the best in Iceland. Very friendly staff, good quiet location, hot tubs and good food. We had the opportunity to stay in one of the suites, the Antarctica. This is not just accommodation, this is experience. You have the feeling that you are in the Antarctica continent and it feels great. Thank you for a memorable stay.

This property is very nice, the nicest that we stayed at in Iceland. The buildings are all made to look as if they are log buildings. Three hot tubs are outside the main building for everyone’s use – they never appeared to be crowded. The rooms were a fair size for Europe with a huge flat screen TV. Some of the rooms have a nice river view – I recommend asking for a room with a river view. Dinner and breakfast were served in an attractive dining room filled with light and overlooking the river. I tried reindeer carpaccio and lamb. My wife tried salmon three ways and smoked puffin; all were quite good. The owner introduced himself and really cares that you are enjoying your stay.

Room Tip: River view

Hotel Ranga is a 4 star hotel as far as I’m aware but for us and as Iceland hotels go, it was a 5 star. It just felt good.

On arrival the reception staff were so welcoming and even the hotel owner made a point of introducing himself and updating us on the recent arrival of warm dry weather after a long spell of rain.

Did you know Polar Bears are really tall? I’m 6ft 2ins and the bear in reception was towering over me by at least two feet. I checked and apparently some are over 10ft tall when standing. Fact for the day!

Our room, albeit it a humble basic double with en-suite was perfect. Good size comfy bed. Great view of the river, plus a hot tub outside our back door. A packed mini fridge which dare I say, I put our duty free wine and beer in to chill so we could drink that in our room as and when we wanted quiet time. The bath in the en-suite was big enough for two but hot tub outside could take four.

Note re hot tub (think there are four actually). The very busy restaurant is enclosed in glass and all the merry diners will have full view of you as you enjoy your glass of wine in the hot tub. You will be the focus of the evening. Go on, you know you have to do it. Be brave. We weren’t!

Dinner. Smoked Puffin (the bird). Very tasty and not fishy at all. Actually really enjoyed it. The Cod and Sea Bream were very good too. Only criticism is that they are a bit minimalist on the vegetable front but having been to other Icelandic hotels, I think this is the norm. Compared to the UK, yes wine is expensive here. A £5-£6 bottle of Australian white in the UK is about £45 in the Ranga restaurant but you’re on holiday so it’s all part of the occasion.

Breakfast. I love breakfasts and Ranga served the best breakfasts I had in Iceland together with proper bacon. I was a happy man.

As a base from which to tour southern Iceland and assuming you have hired a car, it’s really ideal. It’s quite central. The typical but essential places to visit are Gullfoss, Geysir, Pingvellir (it’s a surprisingly magical place. Quite special.), Jokulsarlon Ice Lagoon (Yes it’s a bit far but you’ll never forget it. Must do Zodiac boat trip around icebergs.) Riverjet boat is a ride for thrill seekers, not a sight seeing boat trip. Seljalandsfoss & Skogafoss waterfalls. There’s various glaciers along the way too and another highlight, but make sure you hire a suitable 4x4, is the F208 road which is just 4-5 hours of stunning off-road landscape but make sure you have approval from the hire company to use your car on this route as it has many water crossings. Ask the hotel reception to check road conditions before you do this.

If, unlike us, you have the luxury of a helicopter to travel around in, a helipad is right outside reception.

Take a walk along the river outside the hotel in the evening too. So peaceful.

Oh hang on, forgot to mention that the bedroom walls are a bit thin but on the plus side I was able to prove that I don’t snore that loudly, “have you heard that man snoring next door?”. OK, so noise may travel a bit between rooms but full marks to the hotel for making earplugs available for light sleepers. The next night was excellent as I could snore to my hearts content and I didn’t wake anyone up.

Very much worth a visit.

Ok, this is not the cheapest hotel to stay in but it is lovely! The staff are exceedingly helpful and will help you plan your sightseeing both organised and if you are driving yourself. The food was fabulous, the rooms were very comfy. There are hot tubs outside for guest to relax in and take in the wonderful scenery. Iceland is a wonderful place to explore and it was great having this hotel as our base. We have visited Iceland 3 times now and this hotel rated very highly. They have a 'night time waking' service for the autumn/winter/spring months if the Aurora Borealis 'turns up'. We would stay there again.

This was our second visit to Iceland and after a two week holiday around the island we decided to finish our holiday with a couple of nights at the Ranga, as we had had such a great time there three years ago.

Again another lovely visit with one exception. On our first morning we were a little late for breakfast, having been given wrong info from the reception staff the previous evening. So ok we arrived in the restaurant to find the room being cleared. Thankfully one of the girls relaid a table for us and we started to collect what was left of the food. I had just put in the batter for a waffle when in walked one of the staff who promptly unplugged the waffle machine and removed it back to the kitchen - Very very poor service from 'the only 4* hotel in Iceland. It is not cheap to stay at the Ranga and I would have expected to be treated with a bit more courtesy - he had watched me put the batter in and there was plenty of other stuff to be cleared so he could have left the waffle to cook.

Room Tip: Ask for a Deluxe room as they overlook the river
