“Salthusid, class and friendliness”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

We got lost finding the restaurant, coming upon it by accident. I was just looking for a place to dine and had read about Salthusid on TA. So glad I recognised it. We spent most of this trip dining on tight budget, but this place was worth the money. Given Icelands high cost of dining, this was good value. We had drinks each and a main course and desert and did not feel the pinch money wise at all. Of course I was only just coming to grips with the exchange rate and underestimated how much $A we spent, but still.

The waitress was very helpful and friendly. When we arrived, there was only one other table but the room filled up by the time we left so this place is popular with the locals as well as the visitors. We both had fish, as you should in a fishing village and it tasted divine along with the warm salad and interesting dressing. cant remember the name of the dish, it is all a blur and too many weeks and experiences ago.

“Fantastic food, fantastic service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

OK this review is from a couple of years ago (Feb 2011, not April 2012 - that's the earliest date the system will allow me to select) but if the same people own it then I'm certain the experience will be the same.

We were staying at the Blue Lagoon Hotel - nothing special - so we were looking for somewhere to eat out and they recommended we go to this place in Grindavik. It looks nothing special from the outside and when we got in we found we were th only people eating there - well to be accurate there was a separate room which was going to have a party that night.

The main restaurant room seems to made completely out of wood - odd when there are no trees left on Iceland!!

Anyway we were hungry and it was freezing outside so we stayed - that was a good decision.

My son and I ordered fish - it was Ling, not a fish that we'd eaten before but it was simply the best fish we have ever tasted! When it came to pudding as my son is allergic to nuts they made a special dessert just for him. Oh and I mentioned that party earlier, well the waitress came over and apologised early on, saying that because of the party the service would be slow...and because of that they gave us the desserts free.

We wanted to say thank you at the end of the meal and the main man came out and had a chat - brilliant place, brilliant service - highly recommended!

“a great dinner retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

came here after a long day touring the southern shore and glacier

the staff made accommodations for our late arrival and were very friendly offering a ride back to our hotel after dinner.

the food variety is limited as per the area, but the fish selection is good and the food is delivered very well with a good selection of wines.

it is a very quiet very nicely decorated restaurant with a great atmosphere

“Give it a try - you'll love the food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2012 via mobile

Interestingly the restaurant looks more like a western saloon because of the massive wood used to build the house. Nevertheless it offered a warm and relatively cosy atmosphere. We've ordered the fish of the day which was a really delicious decision. The service was friendly and the food not that expensive.

“Perfectly placed for a hearty dinner after the Blue Lagoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

Our last afternoon in Iceland was spent in the famous Blue Lagoon. Afterwards, we drove to Grindavik, which is the closest town, to fuel up and decided to find a restaurant for dinner since it was late and raining heavily. At 21.45 we walked into the pretty wooden cottage, Salthusid. We peeked in sheepishly as the place was empty and some of the lights were already off, however instead of being turned away, we were warmly greeted by a welcoming smile and shown to a table. The lights were back on and so was the music for ambience, even though we were the only two people in the restaurant! We ordered the lamb chops and the lamb fillet, set on trying this traditional dish before we left the country. The chef proudly presented the dishes: large portions of genuine food, set on lovingly decorated plates. The taste of the lamb was amazing, both the fillet and surprisingly also the chops. Everything tasted so fresh and you could tell that it came from the heart. We washed it down with a glass of very good red wine and had to get his attention to ask for the bill as he did not want to appear to be kicking us out by asking if we need anything else. The bill was also a pleasant surprise as it was much cheaper than the other restaurants we came across in Iceland. We are very happy we chose Salthusid for our last dinner in Iceland, a truly memorable one!
