My husband and I spent one night at the Springfield, Illinois, Signature Inn. Our niece had recommended the motel to her out-of-town wedding guests so we and several other family members stayed there.
The location is interesting, right next to the city's power plant. The area does not feel "industrial" but the view out our room was smoke belching power plant stacks.
The next thing you notice after the location is the smell. The lobby was extremely musty and "old" smelling. The carpet was dirty and stained, but the furniture was neat and looked fairly new. The front desk staff was extremely helpful and very friendly.
The room itself was well-appointed, including a small refrigerator, cable television, microwave, ironing board, iron, hair dryer, large wardrobe, and desk. The smell followed us from the lobby to the room, unfortunately. We had booked a king-size bed, which had two very thin pillows and worn bed linens. The carpet in the room was bubbled, stained, and very dirty looking.
After attending the wedding and coming back to the room afterwards, we found that the key card on the outside door closest to our room did not work and we had to walk all the way around to the front lobby for entrance. The night desk clerk shrugged and said "yes, that door doesn't work" when we asked him about it.
While getting ready for bed, a cockroach scurried out of the tennis shoe I had been wearing earlier that day. I checked the bed for bugs and turned the light out, hoping for the best.
About a half hour after turning off the lights, the refrigerator started humming and vibrating, so I had to get up and unplug it to get any sort of good nights' sleep.
Made it through the night without bugs crawling up my leg, and my husband and I hurried around to check out. We went to the lobby and had the continential breakfast, which was the usual frozen bagels, waffle machine, cold cereal, juice, and little store-bought muffins. Definitely ordinary, nothing to distinguish it from any other "continental breakfast" in motels across the country.
The room cost was $65 per night, but for another $20 or so we probably should have stayed at one of the higher-end motels right next door and across the street.
If you are looking for a cheap motel with a continental breakfast, this is the place for you. If would also help if you don't mind cockroaches, musty smells, dirty carpets, views of the power plant, and thin bed linens.
The sense I got of the motel is that it is "under renovation" but has quite a ways to go.
I wouldn't recommend it, given there are quite a few other options in the area.
