“Good S.E. Asian cuisine in Springfield, IL”
Mekong Cafe offers a menu that includes both Thai and Vietnamese dishes, and a small sample of Laotian as well (though I have not tried that yet). Generally I fear restaurants like this because they manage to screw up at least one of the cuisines, if not both. That is not the case here. Thai dominates the menu, but both the Thai and Vietnamese dishes are very good. Everything is prepared to order, which means food has not been sitting around getting soggy in steam tables waiting for only the final cooking touch. Ingredients have the crispness that only fresh ingredients display. Sauces are varied and particular to each dish, as opposed to the ubiquitous brown sauce sometimes found in Asian wannabes. The rice-paper spring roles were among the best I've had anywhere, with clearly fresh ingredients. The green curry shrimp and rice dish we ordered was, as we asked it to be, extra hot, as was the beef in chili sauce. This is very good find in Springfield. Not much on ambience, but friendly service and a clearly caring owner.
