Although I don't consider the Mansion View Inn to be horrible, by any means, I do feel a little cheated. Okay, I feel more than a little cheated. On their web site you are shown pictures of gorgeous rooms and are all sorts of hyped up... But you arrive, and at first you feel good - the lobby is quite lovely and the staff up front well dressed - but then you are given your key and the second you enter the elevator (given you aren't on the first floor) you know something isn't right... That thing stinks! I swear, it is the most fowl smelling elevator of all time - the carpet has probably been exposed to the elements for at least 10 years. I had to hold my scarf over my mouth every time we used it (which was only twice - with our luggage - otherwise we took the stairs, even though we were on the fourth floor). But DH and I were still stoked about our Jacuzzi Suite with the Romance Package! We get to room #446, open the door, and.... And.... !!! Well, it was big. It really was aa nice sized room. A good setup. The jacuzzi was a decent size (perfect for two people, no more, not that you'd need that with the Romance Package. heh). But the room looked nothing like the web site. All the fabrics were different, the window treatments, carpet, furniture, etc. Our room was dated to the early 1990's and everything was in bad condition. The bed was lumpy - and very obviously so - the couches and chairs were stiff as a board and were definitly showing their age. If you put your feet on the coffee table, it wobbled. And to top off our first impression, NONE of the items that were supposed to come with the Romance Package were in the room!!! (a bottle of champagne, a $50 certificate to a restaurant, and candles). We immediately called down to the front desk to correct this, and it was a new person. He appologized a million times over, and we could tell he was upset. Obviously, the person on shift before him screwed him over... I will say, he was wonderful and corrected everything as soon as possible. Although, he still forgot the candles, but DH wouldn't call down again. *grin* I wish I remembered his name, because he was a great employee... He even made our dinner reservations for us!! The blonde lady w/ the accent, however.... Not so much. I don't think she really wanted to be there. Anyway, after we went to the front desk again, we realized there was a sign saying they were in the midst of rennovating all of their rooms and that it would be complete in the Spring of 2007. Now, the room was quite lovely. I'm sure had our room been rennovated we would have had a totally different experience. So I won't dismiss this hotel altogether (well, for other people), I just wish their Web site hadn't been so misleading. It never said that only some rooms were rennovated. You were lead to believe that you were getting this gorgeous room, when really when you were getting a tired, run down room that had certainly seen better days. The continental breakfast, however, was great. Much better than most hotels. They had a whole spread of fruit, waffles, french toast, egg and cheese biscuits, pop tarts, cereal, danishes, yogurt, oatmeal, orange juice, milk and all sorts of other stuff. You could even get Famous Amos Chocolate Chip Cookies at the front desk for free. I doubt I will ever stay here again, but then again, I don't exactly stay in Springfield often (in fact, this was only my second time). I do suggest if you condsider it before their rennovation is complete, that you request a rennovated room.
I would also like to add, though, that even although were were right over the train tracks, we barely heard the train. We could hear it, but not loud enough to wake us up or anything. I just wanted to add that since other people complained about all of the noise.
