“Very neat old hotel with great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

My husband and I stayed here as part of our 10 year anniversary trip. We loved it! It's not an extremely modern, chain hotel, but I would much prefer the charm and character, not to mention the personal attention form the staff that you would find here. When we arrived the lady at the front desk walked us back to our suite located behind the hotel in a little cottage. She showed us the best place to park, gave advice on getting around and the restaurants in town. She was very pleasant and patient with us even though she was getting ready to leave for the night after being there all day. When we got in our room, we were impressed. Very nicely decorated, with a fireplace and a large Jacuzzi tub in a spacious bathroom. There was also a tv, stereo, little table for 2, and lots of lounging options. We slept great, (never noticed a train as other reviews have mentioned) and in the morning we had a wonderful meal of breakfast burrito, and tater tots, juice, coffee and other options on an antique buffet. Overall, I thought it was a great experience in a very unique place and I would DEFINITELY return!

Room Tip: The Wisteria and Lavendar room are a great value with private suites with a Jacuzzi tub and fireplac...

This B&B is a former apartment building which makes the rooms large and roomy. The beds were comfortable but the pillows a bit too soft. The Inn only had two other rooms filled when we arrived but by the weekend was full. When entering the room I noticed the cleaning people had done a very, very poor job dusting the elaborate headboard (there was so much dust I took a Kleenex and dusted it myself). The balcony we had was a shared balcony. While I didn't mind sharing the balcony at all, I would have liked a screen door on our door to the balcony as the other room had. The only view available on either side of the building is parking lots, so if you sit outside, do it for the fresh air. The Inn is great for walking or using mass transit to see the sights in the city center, however it is only one block for the railroad tracks and there are a lot of trains running all night. All guests seemed to complain about lack of sleep due to the trains. Our room also had the disadvantage of a toilet dripping all nigh. I reported the problem and was told, "that is already on our list of repairs"...in other words they put us in a room with problems that they knew about ahead of time. The repair was not made before our departure.

The had jetted tubs in the bathroom and the jets had good power and was very relaxing after walking all day. However again there was a lack of cleanliness. The area around the jest need to be scrubbed and perhaps white vinegar being run through the lines.

The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The food was good, however when I made reservations, I did inform them of a food allergy to blueberries. Guess what was served two of the three mornings we were there. Yup blueberry items. One morning it was French toast stuffed with blueberries. I was offered toast in place of it (would have rather have had plain French toast substituted. Another day, with out even being asked, a blueberry scone was served. They did have a different scone available, would have been better which I wanted before serving it. Also on the mornings they were full there was not enough seating for breakfast.

They had wine and cheese at night, but between checking in people and answering the phone they tended to have problems keeping the wine, cheese and crackers filled. Fruit was available all day and night which was a nice touch and they also had an area where you could obtain drinks, beer and snacks with payment on the honor system and you could also get movies or games to use. This was located on the third floor, which made it great for us (we were on the third floor) but it was kind of odd it was not located in the common area on the first floor. A basket of tasty cookies were delivered every night to our room and bottles of wine were available. Prices varied per bottle.

Would I stay there again? Doubtful.

Room Tip: There are two room suites with full living rooms if you are going with friends or another couple.

We loved the Gladiolus Suite, extremely large. Traditional décor, nice toiletries, mulled soaps etc. Nice balcony, great location, walking distance to Frank Lloyd Wright hse. and the capitol. Cookies on door homey touch. The staff was great, very accommodating. They accommodated us in the morning with three addional guest couples my husbands college friends that we were down in Springfield with for a wedding, it was nice to spend our last morning dinning with them, brkfst was very good. The other couples were surprised how lovely 835 was.

Room Tip: Very spacious

We were in the Gladiolus Suite. It was spacious and clean and very Victorian. It had high ceilings and woodwork. The location was terrific for all things Lincoln and for the Frank Lloyd Wright house just around the corner. The staff was helpful. And the breakfasts were wonderful.

Room Tip: They are all different. Don't pick the Gladiolus Suite if you are really tall, maybe over 6'...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Inn at 835. We had a great room, very comfortable. The balcony, though modest in appearance, was a nice plus. Breakfast was a bit crowded, but delicious nonetheless.

WE had the Magnolia room. It was a bit smaller than I thought but beautifully decorated and very clean. What we loved most about 835 are all their little touches. For instance a rubber duckie on a towel in the bathroom is just too cute! Specifically loved the basket of fresh homemade cookies on our doorknob each night with a note of the next days weather! It was adorable and quite a surprise. The breakfast was fabulous and NORMAL. Not over the top weird dishes like we've had before. I specificaly loved the blueberry waffle. It was heaven! The innkeeper was nice and helpful and we just loved this place. Plan to go back and stay in the Rose Suite. I would highly recommend staying here to anyone!!

Room Tip: There is an elevator to go up to the third floor so you don't have to carry all your luggage up...

We booked a room specifically with a veranda and thought that would be a plus. Actually the veranda had a screen door with holes, a wicker chair in ruins and a couch covered with a dirty throw cover. The wood needed scraping and painting. This veranda shouldn't be listed as an extra. Otherwise we found the stay pleasant with a nice room, staff, and meal.
