The new management of The Henry Mischler House is really superb, considering the last owners. Jane Murphy has really turned the place around and made it alot better. I've stayed here with other guests and we all agree that it is the best stay for our dollar.

Jane Murphy also changed the rules for the house next door, the Stuve House. The guests that stay there are allowed to be in the main house and get the breakfast in the main house as well. They are also adding a tea-room to the next door house which will offer a very comfortable setting with pies, sandwiches, and of course tea.

I would really recommend this place to anyone who wants a home-like atmosphere and the friendly attitudes of Jane and her son and daughter.

I second the reviews of people who, like us, were housed in the house next door. 2nd rate to be sure. I didn't realize the price difference meant such a reduction in quality. Their website should clearly state the differences in the 2 houses as it relates to ambience and food. It is misleading.

Yes, the host was friendly and shared menus with us. We arrived at 3:30 and a girl was still cleaning our room. No problem-we drove around. Location is a plus, right across from the Lincoln home street. The room was clean, however there was only 1/2 roll of toilet paper and no extras in sight. Only 2 towels per person - a bath towel and a washcloth. No handtowels or the size a woman would use to wrap her wet hair in. Surely the owner can provide adequate towels! I did not discover this until late at night, so if we could have asked for more, it was too late to find out.

Very loud sounds from other guests on the floor opening and shutting their doors and the hall bathroom door - the people weren't loud; the doors were.

Our room was on the back and had a small porch overlooking the backyard - one of the reasons we chose it. We like to be outdoors. It is among large trees, a plus, however there were leaves, tree debris, and just plain dirt on the porch - a daily sweeping of this would take only a couple minutes and should be required. Also there were cigarette butts in an ashtray there. Ugh. The bed was ok, a little soft. We opened the door to the porch for some nice night air - don't like air conditioning much. I was startled awake by one of the nearby trains (about 2 blocks away) which made regular runs all night long and blasted its horn for a looooong time - not just short blasts. It was so bad I shut the porch door, but was still conscious of it throughout the night, and I'm not really a light sleeper. When laying there awake, I could smell the mold/mustiness of the room.

I could not believe the measly breakfast set up, as others have mentioned. Boxes of cereal on top of the refrig., a carton of juice and milk, some yogurt, a half loaf of bread, and old-looking donuts - could they at least have had some nice pastries??? Why doesn't the website tell you their "full breakfast" is what it is? Or make a distinction between each house's offerings.

The other house did look nicer, and according to other review, those guests received a nice breakfast. We felt like the poor cousins not worthy of attention. You can find a better place for your money.

Plusses:
1. The owners, Roger and Dave, are warm, welcoming, relaxed and charming hosts.
2. The garden is a lovely oasis, if a bit eclectic and eccentric.
3. You can walk to almost anything in Springfield, including the Lincoln museum, Dana-Thomas (Frank Lloyd Wright) House, old capital with Lincoln-Herndon law offices, new capital and some great dining and, of course, the Lincoln Home site which is across the street.
3. The price is reasonable.
4. The Henry Mischler house itself is lovely and would probably rate higher if we had actually had rooms inside it.

Minuses:
The owners also recently acquired the house next door, which is definitely not ready for prime time. The room we had was quite comfortable; good bed and all, but the common areas are just not up to par. They aren't air conditioned. The kitchen is very primitive with a freezer that won't make ice. Continental breakfast stuff is in the frig (but the sweet rolls were past their expiration date.) There was no milk for the coffee; no glasses larger than juice glasses - but no juice! The price is cheaper, but it is not worth it and you are not served breakfast - not even coffee.

We had a good time in beautiful Springfield and enjoyed our hosts, but the accommodations were less than great. Just be sure when you book that you are put in the actual Henry Mischler house. Pay the extra $20 bucks and enjoy it. If it isn't available, find somewhere else to stay unless you are very adventurous.

We booked a room at the Henry Mischler House and were placed in the house next door instead. It had no air conditioning in the common rooms. The breakfast consisted of fruit, cold cereal, eggs, Hostess donuts, inexpensive pastries, and coffee, all of which we had to prepare ourselves.

I would not stay at this bed and breakfast again, and would advise anyone doing so to be sure they are staying at the main house.

Our stay at The Mischler House was outstanding. From the moment we arrived Roger, the Innkeeper, made us feel right at home. He was so helpful in guiding us to restaurants for dinner, and had an array of menus on hand. The breakfasts were delicious, during which Roger joined us for coffee and great conversation. The house is very inviting, and full of beautiful antiques. Our room was very clean, comfortable and cozy. The location could not be any better. We walked everywhere. We highly recommend The Mischler House.
