Plusses:
1. The owners, Roger and Dave, are warm, welcoming, relaxed and charming hosts.
2. The garden is a lovely oasis, if a bit eclectic and eccentric.
3. You can walk to almost anything in Springfield, including the Lincoln museum, Dana-Thomas (Frank Lloyd Wright) House, old capital with Lincoln-Herndon law offices, new capital and some great dining and, of course, the Lincoln Home site which is across the street.
3. The price is reasonable.
4. The Henry Mischler house itself is lovely and would probably rate higher if we had actually had rooms inside it.
Minuses:
The owners also recently acquired the house next door, which is definitely not ready for prime time. The room we had was quite comfortable; good bed and all, but the common areas are just not up to par. They aren't air conditioned. The kitchen is very primitive with a freezer that won't make ice. Continental breakfast stuff is in the frig (but the sweet rolls were past their expiration date.) There was no milk for the coffee; no glasses larger than juice glasses - but no juice! The price is cheaper, but it is not worth it and you are not served breakfast - not even coffee.
We had a good time in beautiful Springfield and enjoyed our hosts, but the accommodations were less than great. Just be sure when you book that you are put in the actual Henry Mischler house. Pay the extra $20 bucks and enjoy it. If it isn't available, find somewhere else to stay unless you are very adventurous.
