“Awesome Diner Food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2008

While traveling, my husband and I tend to gravitate towards places where the locals would eat, and the Sunrise Cafe fits the bill perfectly. It is located in an unassuming building in a working-class neighborhood near downtown Springfield. The place is clean, clean, clean (we saw a waitress wiping down the chair legs while bussing a table), the wait staff is extremely friendly, the price is right, and the food is phenominal. If you are looking for more elegant surroundings, this is not the place for you. There are several booths and the tables are all metal with orange vinyl chairs. There was also a dining bar area where you could sit and chat with the cook while waiting for your food. The decorations are bare-bones.
The sign outside advertises "breakfast anytime," and since I was craving scrambled eggs, my husband and I decided to give it a try for dinner. I ordered "Dan's Choice," which is two eggs, toast, potatoes, and either bacon, ham, or sausage, all for around $5.50. My husband had the double cheeseburger and fries. We both had a drink, and our total bill was $15 (I had orange juice and he had a Pepsi). The eggs were probably some of the best scrambled eggs I have ever had: light, fluffy, cooked to perfection and not greasy. The bacon was perfectly cooked, as were the potatoes (large chunks of potatoes with skin-on, grilled).
The menu was extensive and included all the usual breakfast items such as biscuits/gravy, pancakes, waffles, omlettes, and anything else you can imagine. The lunch/dinner menu was equally extensive.
There were several tables with elderly "locals" and the waitresses all seemed to know them, which is a good sign because if a restaurant has repeat local business, it must be doing something right.
If you are looking for awesome food at a great price, served by friendly waitresses, then the Sunrise Cafe is the place for you. Highly recommended to others who like to eat at diners while traveling.

“Inexpensive, tasty, diner-style”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2005

The full name of this restaurant is "Hamburger Dan's Sunrise Cafe". It's located at 1201 South 2nd Street, a block North of S. Grand Ave. (corner of 2nd and Vine). A popular spot since 1989, this diner is open every day of the week, 6AM to 9PM, and breakfast & lunch are always available, with dinner served 4PM to closing. Both times that I've dined here, I've observed patrons from across the spectrum: senior citizens, professionals, college students, and families. It seems everyone likes delicious, inexpensive diner food, and there is sometimes a wait during peak hours. However, you can call ahead and place a take-out order, and pick it up from their drive-thru! They also have some limited outdoor seating, but it seemed no one was willing to brave the strong summer sun in the unshaded outdoor area, which is perhaps more pleasant in the early morning hours. Inside is rather plain, with laminated tables and no special decor--but not trashy, either.

I enjoyed a country fried steak with scrambled eggs, hash browns, and toast ($5.75), and coffee (85c). The country fried steak was hot, crispy, and juicy, with a mild gravy, and seemed to be about a 5 oz portion of meat, while the scrambled eggs were among the best I've had anywhere, hot, light & fluffy, without being runny or scorched, and not greasy. The hash browns and toast were standard fare. The coffee was good. Service was pleasant and attentive, and the meal arrived surprisingly fast. I also noted the diners around me enjoying large 3-egg omelettes, biscuits & gravy, triple cheeseburgers, and eggs Benedict. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their meals. I highly recommend this if you're looking for an informal, inexpensive, but very tasty and filling meal. For example, I noted a weekend special on the menu: 3 eggs any style, meat, potatoes, toast, and coffee for a mere $4.95. Compare that to the $18 brunch offered by a trendy downtown hotel, and the value is obvious!
