“Don't waste your time!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

The museum is free, and that is about the only thing that it has going for it. The banners and the ads around town look great, the museum? Not so much. Very outdated, and not so hands on for kids. Please don't waste your time on this one, and just go to the State Capitol you will learn more!

I am sorry you were disappointed in your visit. Our popular new Play Museum in the lower level is a hands-on area designed for children ages 3 - 10. Children can dig for fossils, crawl through a cave, touch fossils, frame and hang art, see things up close through a videomicrosope, and learn through play. Our first floor natural history exhibit includes pull out drawers and interactive audio and video. We hope you will come back for a return visit.

“A piece of Illinois history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

We have been several times. The last time they had updated the museum. The volunteer workers were very helpful and shared a lot of information with us. My favorite place are the panoramas that are set up with rooms of the period.

“Learn things you never knew you never knew.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

A lot of Illinois State history. Mostly natural history and also focus on the Native Americans who lived in the region. There are a lot of interactive exhibits for kids and also a "play room" on the lowest level. Get there early to avoid the crowds.

“the dumbining in Springfield”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2012

This museum used to be GREAT. Now it is ok. They did not need more money, just to leave the exhibits instead of removing them. The giant redwood tree slice, the dioramas , the giant glowing minerals, well it is all gone, and in it's place...20 and 21st century life in a house...

“Small, free, and exceptionally nice”

Interactive displays kids love. Our grandsons liked swiping their cards to see a video or commentary. Imaginative, eye catching dioramas. You need about 2 hours here.
