Walking through the "new" Illinois State Capitol is worth the time and won't take too long if you want to fit it into a busy agenda that is likely to be filled with all of the other wonderful sites in Springfield. There are tours that leave from the central area on the first floor every 30 minutes or so on the hour and half-hour. The tours are fairly brief taking about 20 - 25 minutes. It is worth planning to join one of these as our tour guide hit the highlights but did not necessarily dwell on superfluous information. In fact, if anything, it was a little light on facts but you can always ask questions to fill in the gaps as you wish. The senate chamber and representative hall were both quite nice to see and the statues and portraits available for view on the second floor were also interesting. Overall, the marble used throughout the building gave the overall structure a beautiful feel aesthetically. The grounds with the fountains out front were also worthwhile to appreciate firsthand. I recommend taking the time to see the capitol amidst your Lincoln itinerary.
