“Just a good stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2010

This was our first stay at a b&b and it was as much as a surprise as it was a dissapointment.

Overall we think it was a positive experience. Roger is a very friendly and helpfull proprietor, the rippon kinsella house is a lovely house with loads of character. It has a great garden and its nice to sit on the porch and relax. We stayed at the Maid's room. The maid's room is a comfortable room with a spacious bathroom and seperate sitting area in the hall. The maid's room did have some drawbacks that should be fixed. The bed was really creaky and loud and the windows didn't have any real curtains, so you will be awake when the sun is shining,

As for the service. That could have been better. At times we couldnt find the proprietor anywhere on the property and there was no easy way of contacting him other then ringing the front doorbell. This is something they should fix.

But these were all minor inconveniences. Overall we had a pleasant stay and i enjoyed our stay at the Rippon Kinsella house.
That's why i give this B&B a positive recommendation and hoping they will address the issues of the creaking bed, no curtains and find a better way of getting in touch with the proprietor.

We stayed at the Rippon-Kinsella House over Thanksgiving weekend. Roger was extremely accommodating. We had the largest room with a beautiful big bathroom. The room was quiet and lovely and we enjoyed the tour Roger gave us of the house. He was initially welcoming and helpful, then left us alone for privacy. We ate breakfast out because we wanted to get an early start to the day for historical attractions, so we can't speak about the meal served, but we would highly recommend this B and B. We'd absolutely go back again.

Absolutely everything a bed and breakfast should be. Charming hosts, beautifully decorated with genuine antiques, a tasty breakfast, and more. (loved the easter egg tree in the front yard.) Fabulous color scheme in the Campaign Room. Lovely gothic staircase. Stunning tiled fireplaces in the Parlor, Library, and Dining rooms. A lot of love and attention to detail has gone into restoring this mansion to the gem that it is. Super convenient to all the historic sites, restaurants, and shops.... If I'm ever in Springfield again, I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else but here.

We were disappointed with our stay at the Rippon-Kinsella house. It was our honeymoon night and when we arrived at the house there was so much junk on the porches and in the yard, we weren't sure which door to go to and how to get to the door. The inside of the house seemed dark and cluttered. Our room was fairly nice, but we had to go out of the room to the bathroom which was next door. We ate breakfast the next morning outside at a table and there was a vase of dead flowers in dirty water on it. Breakfast was frozen waffles and sausage that had been mircowaved. The coffee was good, though. Maybe they were just having a bad day, but we will not be going back.

We traveled from Tucson, Arizona and truly enjoyed our two day stay at the Mansion! Roger is a fantastic host and you could tell that his heart is really in keeping the Mansion in order and comfortable. He gave us a personal tour, a delicious breakfast each morning, and fantastic Springfield hospitality! We loved the many antiques and decor of the Mansion and hope to return again!

Thanks for making us feel at home Roger! Hope to see you again soon!

The other reviews about the Rippon Kinsella House led me to make a reservation to stay here and they were right on. This is a wonderful old mansion filled with antiques - there is so much to see it's like a museum. We stayed in the Campaign Room which was very comfortable and included a number of interesting early vintage televisions among the many antiques. The proprietor, Roger, is a wonderful host. We arrived abound 6 and had a relaxing glass of wine with cheese and crackers on the outside porch. So much nicer than sitting in a bland hotel room!
We only stayed one night and wish we had at least another day. The Lincoln Museum was much better than expected. We spent 3 hours. We would have liked to explore other sites including the Governors Mansion which Roger mentioned is open on Tuesday and Thursdays but did not have time. We will have to return again. And now we know where to stay!
