“Worth the walk!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2008

Take a 12 minute stroll out of Sissi towards the National Highway and be prepared to feast your senses in a sensational taverna which has ambiance to die for.
Being off the beaten track has meant that this owner has had to earn a reputation for his food instead of simply having a seafront position.
He Has!

The food on offer here is of a totally different class to that which is sold elsewhere in Sissi.
Much of the produce is home grown/reared and the pride evident when you are told of this is to their great credit.
If you are at all adventurous have what is on the specials menu, you won't be disappointed.

There are tables set outside in their olive grove which if you are lucky enough to get one prove to only enhance the overall experience.
Sitting between olive tree's under the stars, simple lighting, basic wooden tables, with the one you love sharing a carafe or two of local wine,it doesn't get much better than this!

Go there and enjoy yourself, you won't regret it

“Excellent freshly-prepared local food, lovely people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2008

This small taverna is a shining example of the sort of food I want to eat - whether at home or on holiday.

Liofito - apparently, the name means 'olive grove' - is on the main road into Sissi, and is probably never discovered by many visitors, as it is well away from the harbour and seafront tavernas that cater to the majority of tourists.

It doesn't look much from the outside, but there is a small terrace with half a dozen tables, and more tables are set out under the olive trees at the back. This is where we found a number of locals (ex-pat Brits and genuine Cretans) enjoying the most authentic local food around.

The main draw of this place is that many of the ingredients are produced by the owners themselves; the olive oil comes from their own trees, the cheese from their goats, the rabbit from their farm and the vegetables are home-grown. It's all organic, too, and the owner is very happy to chat with you about his passion for fresh, healthy ingredients - he's particularly proud of his goats!

The printed menu is fairly limited, but there are always two or three daily specials, and these are the best dishes to order as you know they're made from whatever is best and freshest that day. That said, there are some great starters and salads on the menu that are very different to what appears on the other taverna menus in Sissi.

Don't expect fresh fish; specials we tried included rabbit, pork and veal dishes as well as some vegetarian dishes such as a tasty cauliflower, potato and tomato stew, and an oven-baked dish of chickpeas and peppers. We also had great dolmades made with courgette flowers rather than the more usual vine leaves and, from the printed menu, good souvlaki and excellent fried calamares.

The service was very friendly and attentive, even when they were busy. We were always given a dish of olives, lovely dark brown bread and their home-produced olive oil to nibble, and our meal invariably ended with a plate of beautiful sweet grapes and shots of raki... all free of charge.

If you want a view of the sunset and exotic cocktails, then this isn't the place for you, but if great food and an authentic Cretan welcome is more your style, you won't be disappointed with Liofito.
