We booked the Hoover Dam VIP tour through Tix 4 Tonight. We paid $63/person for a great tour. They picked us up in a small shuttle bus with large windows and only 15 people. Our guide Joanie was a comedian and very entertaining. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the Dam and then you spend 15 minutes watching an educational video on the Dam. Then you go on a 20 minute tour of the power plant but the tour does not include the inner workings of the dam. Next, you take a 30 minute walking tour with your guide over the top of the dam. On the way back, you stop in Boulder City for lunch at the Boulder City Museum. This stop contains more interesting historical information and photographs than the visitor center at the dam. Finally you take a stop at Ethel M's chocolate factory for about 20 minutes. The entire trip took about 6 1/2 hours. Most of the larger bus tours make you spend more time on the bus, picking up passengers. They also stop for lunch at a buffet/casino near Boulder City and stay there for 1 hour 45 minutes. I was happy with our choice in tours and would highly recommend this tour! However, if you are looking to spend more time inside the dam you might want to consider checking into the other tours.

There was a brochure in our Las Vegas Hotel room and we spotted the Super Express Hoover Dam Tour run by Sightseeing Tours Unlimited of Nevada. It was a bit over $40 each and included a VIP Interior Tour of the dam. We booked the night before and were reminded at 7am with a phone call from the Company. We were picked up at Ballys in a brand new bus and did the rounds of the other hotels picking up guests. We didn't mind as it gave us a chance to see a bit of Las Vegas and the other hotels. Were then taken to a central station. Back on the bus and Tony our driver got into gear with an excellent commentary on the way to the dam. The Hoover dam is an engineering marvel and given it was built in the 1930s it is even more remarkable. I can't believe reviewers on this site would say don't bother taking the tour inside as you get to see a short film, the rock they had to get through, the diversion tunnel and the 8 turbines. Plus the excellent viewing platform. All in all a remarkable experience. Tony did say we went on an excellent day when it wasn't too crowded as he said the road can be banked up for miles. So I would recommend the complete tour and this particular tour company as outstanding. I had been considering the Pink Jeep tour but thought it was a bit dear.

We took the Powerplant Tour costing $31 for two adults and a child. The tour part was quite a waste of money (unless you were REALLY interested in such things), as you spent ages walking in line to see the powerplant from one room, then trailed back up again to actually see the dam - which is presumably what we all were there for. The best part was walking across the dam, which you could have done for no cost at all. The next day we drove to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas and drove right over it and you can get great views from various parking lots overlooking it. We made a special trip to see the dam, not realising we would drive over it the next day - so wish we'd done our homework first!

Visited Hoover Dam on route back to Las Vegas after touring Northern Arizona.
Having seen a programme on Discovery Channel about the building of the Dam some weeks before our visit, it was good to see the Dam for real!
Took the full Dam tour which was very interesting. Guide very informative and open to questions.
The constuction site where the new bridge over the Dam is being built was huge. Would love to go back when bridge is built!
Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Visited the Hoover Dam as part of a trip to Vegas in Mrach 08, we drove out of Vegas at 8.00am and arrived at the Hoover Dam by 8.45am, the drive is easy and shouldn't put anyone off.

On arriving, park in the visitors centre car park on the NV side of the Dam, its right above where you can buy the tickets for the tour.

There are two tour options to choose from, we opted for the extened tour which takes you into the diversion tunnel viewing area, power house, tdam access / ventilation tunnels and finishes on top of the Dam wall. the guide was excellent and provided a good overview of the history of the dam and its construction way back when men were men..

You can get lunch at the visitors centre, usual stuff like burgers, chicken, fries, salads etc.

Good tip,, arrive at the dam early in the morning (before 9.30) and book youself onto the 10.00 or 10.30 tour as soon as you arrive, you will avoid the tour operators and their coachloads of tourists who arrive from 11.00 onwards, secondly make sure you book the extended tour, it costs a few dollars more but well worth it.

Finally, dont be tempted to do the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon in one day, you wont leave your self enough time to take it all in, we left the Hoover Dam after lunch and visited the Red Rock Canyon in the afternoon, this is only 40 minutes from Vegas and combing the two worked well.

Leave a hole day for the Grand Canyon if your driving there yourself, oh and what a butifull drive it is....
