I went to Anchorage at the beginning of a Holland America cruisetour on May 24. Flying into the city is breathtaking on a clear day. You see mountains for miles and miles. It looks like you will land on the water.
Holland America had a pretty good operation going (transfer from the airport to the hotel- Westmark Anchorage).
Favorite activities while in Achorage:
>Tony Knowles Trail (you can bike it or walk it).
>City market (only on Sat/Sun) where you can see local vendors and sample local cuisine.
>Hilton hotel has a great display of polar bear and grizzly. Good photo op.
>Snow Goose Brewery- casual atmosphere, enjoyed the Wasabi-lime Halibut sandwich very much. My whole party enjoyed their meal.
>Glacier Brewhouse was our favorite in Anchorage- great atmosphere, good variety of menu. I split the Rotisserie Prime Rib with my mother and it was plenty to fill us both up.
> On our free day, we rented a vehicle from Thrifty and they picked us up at the hotel. Drove South on Seward Hwy. The scenery was incredible! We stopped at a wildlife preserve.. got close to animals, stopped to watch Alaska Natives fish for Hulligans, stopped at bird island to enjoy the scenery (we saw mountain goat using telescope). Continued on to Portage glacier park. It was a GREAT day. Be sure to look for moose along side the road as you travel.
