Best Western Golden Lion Hotel

Jul 12, 2008

Booked this through Priceline so good rate for peak summer period. We were worried about bad reviews on Tripadvisor and other websites so very skeptical about this hotel. However when we arrived front desk was very pleasant and effiicent. Hotel is older low rise but in good condition. Room was clean and well stocked with towels, micro, mini fridge, and toiletries. Beds a little on the firm side but sheets and coverings were clean. Our only complaint was they offered no shuttle service to and from the airport and was about a $ 20 taxi ride. We ate in the resturant for breakfast and it was fine nothing to brag about. The hotel was surprisingly quiet being near Seward Hwy We walked to Fred Meyer for supplies and found a great pizza place (actually the best pizza we have ever had) called the Moose Tooth don't miss it! We did not take any pictures but all was fine and in working order.

After reading the various reviews of this hotel, I had mixed feelings about making a reservation, but decided to take a chance.

Arriving later in the evening, the front desk clerk was courteous and accomodating, even welcomed us, saying she was awaiting our arrival. A nice feeling, after traveling many air miles to get to Anchorage.

The room was very presentable, spacious, with one comfy king bed, and a clean bathroom. Upon showering, I understood what previous comments about a low shower head referred to. Believe me, you have to bend over, in order to get water on your soapy hair! Otherwise, it was clean & well stocked.

The next day was when problems began. When we returned to our room, electronic key card refused entry. Maid said "cell phone demagnetized it", but I informed her, it was nowhere near a cell phone. Figuring a trip to the front desk would solve the problem, I was wrong! They also claim cell phone demagnetized the card. After TWO trips back to the front desk, and 4 Maintenance men, and 3 Hotel Maids later, it took a 40' ladder, to gain window entry to our room to unlock it from the inside. Obviously the night latch hadn't completely disengaged, showing the room "locked from the inside". This took more than an hour to resolve. Not a fun experience. I finally requested a chair from nearby room, and sat in hallway, waiting on resolution.

Breakfast in their Lion Den Restaurant was good. Wait staff friendly & accomodating.

Would I return? Yes, I believe I would. Strictly a maintenance problem. Frustrating, but finally resolved.

Go to "Lily's" restaurant on Tudor for an even better breakfast!

“Not a good choice.”

Best Western Golden Lion Hotel

This was a barely adequate, tired hotel. Location was convenient, and that is the only positive I can give to it. The first clue was the parking lot which had cracks and tall weeds – giving the outside an aura of desertion. Bur, we had already guaranteed our room so we were stuck. This was especially galling since there were many newer “product” hotels within blocks. Carpets, walls, towels, bed were all tired. We were glad to leave. Rating D.

I'm nearing the end of my 6-night stay for work. My expectations were tempered by the fact that this is a budget hotel.

The hotel was easy to find with plenty of parking. The hotel and my room were in decent shape, not great nor shabby. The furnishings in the room were not exactly modern but everything worked and the room was clean and spacious. There was a microwave and small frig in the room. The bathroom was a bit small and the showerhead was too low. I had to stoop to wash my hair.

My interactions with the front desk personnel did not find anyone who was overly friendly, helpful, or polite. The housekeeping staff was friendly and helpful.

There was a small fitness area directly across from the front desk. It is located behind glass so everyone walking by the front can see you as you exercise. It's a bit of a strange layout. There is also a laundry room with coin operated machines next to the fitness room.

On the second floor is a restaurant and lounge area. There is also a small room with a computer and printer for guests to use. Everytime I tried to use it, some kid was playing on the computer so I never got a chance to use it during my entire stay.

Overall this is an average hotel with nothing spectacular. It's not bad if you can get a decent rate. Otherwise it is not worth it. This would not be my first choice if I was on vacation.
