we were lucky to get a room with a balcony - a small one at that but a great view from our room. Good area for walking and shopping. No kettle in room and no fridge so ice was attained from the ice machine to keep medication cool. we decided not to eat at the hotel and walked and found a great pub the walls were covered in hand made quilts. Rooms were a bit out dated and lifts were slow.

We received outstanding service at this hotel. We needed to catch a late flight, so asked what our options for luggage could be. They stored the luggage for us until we were ready to go to the airport, called a cab for us, and helped put the luggage in the cab. We had trouble getting the computer to print out our boarding passes. Two people came to help and solved the problem.
The location of the hotel is outstanding as noted in previous reviews.
The only complaint we had was finding a leftover bar of soap and one strand of long hair in the shower. That is why we rated the cleanliness poor.

We stayed here 2 nights after a HA cruise--the first night included in the cruise price and the 2nd night we had reserved ourselves for a set price. However, for the 2nd night the desk clerk attempted to charge us $100 more than the reserved price!! Only when I showed her our confirmation was she willing to lower the price by that $100. Then they add another $40 or so to your credit card as a "reserve for incidentals" we were told. I said there would be NO incidentals and she still insisted on leaving the extra amount. We had a huge room on the 7th floor which in itself was fairly nice---BUT---the road noise all night long sounded like jets landing or a freight train roaring through. It was awful. I guess it is due to the poorly constructed glass doors which open onto the small balcony overlooking the street. Overall, we found the Westmark Hotels used
on our cruise/land tour to be of average quality and average or below customer service---they are just there to fulfill the Holland America cruise groups that pass through their doors by the thousands---never to return again, I'm sure. So, they don't too much care what you think.

Room Tip: bring your ear-plugs

One of the few Westmarks that was good--of course large city, bigger. All rooms have a balcony,no furniture though, so if you go out you stand or lug something out of the room.Nice bath and clean. What I thought was a small lobby, close to bus depot which had some unsavory people milling about and shouting. Lots of restaurants close but nothing in hotel, that I saw, where you could view more than the little balcony view.

We stayed at the Westmark Anchorage with a Holland America cruisetour and were quite satisfied. The hotel is well located, with plenty of dining options within easy walking distance. We enjoyed the trolley tour (not operated by the hotel) only a couple of blocks away. Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable and we had a good night's sleep. The hotel is starting to show it's age and could use some sprucing up, but we experienced no problems and enjoyed our stay.

For one when we arrived at the hotel there was a group of people in the parking lot - drinking, smoking and continued to drive around in circles around the premises. Against our better judgement we checked in the hotel after asking if we would be charged if we did not show. Which of course they would charge our card since it was past the cancellation policy.
We checked in got in the elevator and it smelled of paint, got off on our floor and there was tape up around the elevator stating WET PAINT. Walked into our room and it lingered with the stench of stale cigarettes. The room is very, very outdated tried to lay down on the bed and springs were popping.
Needless to say we called the Marriott and left the Westmark immediately. Don't try and cut corners during your stay in Anchorage -- Call the Marriott. The staff is great, bedrooms are updated, clean, fresh and comfortable.

Room Tip: Highly discourage anyone from reserving a room here.

We were lucky to have a room on the 14th floor where we could enjoy the views from our balcony of downtown, the sea, and the Captain Cook Hotel where I really would have preferred to stay. While the weather was warm and sunny, the hotel provided no public space to view the mountains and distant Mt. McKinley. The property is similar to a Holiday Inn. But the location was perfect, within a short walk to a wide range of tourist shops, restaurants, beautiful gardens, and across the street from a terrific micro-brewery with great food, great beer (must be the delicious water), and a friendly crowd of locals and tourists.

Room Tip: Rooms on the north side of the building face the mountains. Higher floors offer better views.
