“DO NOT STAY HERE......”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

For one when we arrived at the hotel there was a group of people in the parking lot - drinking, smoking and continued to drive around in circles around the premises. Against our better judgement we checked in the hotel after asking if we would be charged if we did not show. Which of course they would charge our card since it was past the cancellation policy.
We checked in got in the elevator and it smelled of paint, got off on our floor and there was tape up around the elevator stating WET PAINT. Walked into our room and it lingered with the stench of stale cigarettes. The room is very, very outdated tried to lay down on the bed and springs were popping.
Needless to say we called the Marriott and left the Westmark immediately. Don't try and cut corners during your stay in Anchorage -- Call the Marriott. The staff is great, bedrooms are updated, clean, fresh and comfortable.

Room Tip: Highly discourage anyone from reserving a room here.

We were lucky to have a room on the 14th floor where we could enjoy the views from our balcony of downtown, the sea, and the Captain Cook Hotel where I really would have preferred to stay. While the weather was warm and sunny, the hotel provided no public space to view the mountains and distant Mt. McKinley. The property is similar to a Holiday Inn. But the location was perfect, within a short walk to a wide range of tourist shops, restaurants, beautiful gardens, and across the street from a terrific micro-brewery with great food, great beer (must be the delicious water), and a friendly crowd of locals and tourists.

Room Tip: Rooms on the north side of the building face the mountains. Higher floors offer better views.

Our first impressions of this hotel were poor because the bus brought us through the little old office at the back (perhaps the fault of the bus company and not the hotel??) The staff weren't very welcoming and when we made a query to a young woman when leaving, we were spoken to with a patronizing tone; she laughed at us and said "really don't worry we won't leave you behind"...when we insisted she investigate our query she then understood our concern as we were independent travelers and not part of the group she was focussing on. She realised there had been a mix-up that needed sorting out. The room was very average - a drab 70s style of decor, however, it was clean and comfortable enough and nice to have a coffee machine. The main lobby was also outdated although there were some comfortable chairs around, especially in front of the gas "log" fire. That gave the lobby a welcoming feel. It would be quite easy to update the lobby simply by replacing the old, tired curtains and freshening the large room up with a coat of paint in a modern colour. The addition of a bar near/next to the lobby would really give the area a buzz as most of the chairs, tables, lamps in that space were unused. I did find the young man on the front desk very pleasant and that helped to make us feel a bit more welcome.

Stayed here a couple nights prior to our Holland America cruise tour. Loacation is central, room was clean, restaurant was ok. But the staff were outstanding. Everyone we came I contact with was very accommodating and just couldn't have been nicer. Not a navy place, but if you need a reasonably priced place to crash, this is a fine choice.

We stayed a night after a cruise.
We had a challenge in our party of four that required us to cut our cruise-tour short and fly out of Anchorage after just the cruise. The staff of the hotel were accommodating in allowing us a late check-out, although we decided to pay for a very-late-checkout of 6:00pm since the best flights were red-eye flights. After eating, they also let us hang around the lobby and use their internet until we took a shuttle to the airport.
Many of the things we wanted to see in Anchorage were within walking distance of the hotel. You cannot beat the souvenir shopping nearby.
We would be glad to discover that a future cruise included the Westmark.

Room Tip: You can smell the nearby restaurants cooking on the north side. We like the smell, but know that so...

Nice hotel that could use some updating. Carpet and furnishings a little worn and dated, but the location was great! Friendly and helpful staff. Just step out of the hotel and you're right in the middle of downtown Anchorage.

This was hotel holland America booked for the end of the cruise. Definitely needs updating. Was clean, but wallpaper in bathroom beginning to peel off. Supposed to be wifi in rooms but slow and difficult to connect. Rooms large with wet bar. Beds not great. This is a hotel out of the 70s which has not been updated. Had breakfast here. Service friendly, but food only ok. Location ok, restaurants all around, but noting great. Don't do the trolley around town, was not worth the one hour. All in all can't recommend this hotel.
