“Better maintenance could have improved stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

We stayed one night in The Hotel Captain Cook. The view from our window was absolutely fantastic! The room was very clean however we did experience a minor problem when the picture fell off the wall almost hitting my Daughter. The hotel was conveniently located to most attractions are within walking distance. The Anchorage mall and some great places to eat are just down the street! Our United flight was not leaving for Denver until 11:47 PM so we had to pay for a second night @ the hotel. We also had issue with the elevators not working walking up and down 16 flights of stairs get very old fast. We were taking the Princess Shuttle to the airport and the Captain Cook bell hop picked up our luggage an hour before hand, we needed the service elevator in order to get my mother in law(in a wheelchair) down to the lobby it took 20 minutes before they had room in the elevator. I feel that for $354.00 this shouldn't have happened!

Room Tip: Tower 3 has great veiws just make sure the elevtors are working it a long climb other wise.

Dear Jace1957,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. We appreciate you sharing your experience and we're pleased to see you enjoyed your stay. My sincerest apologies go out to you and your family for any inconveniences we caused by the elevators temporarily not working. The main board decided it was time to stop. We had Hotel staff doing sweeps of the floors and we were taking our guests in the service elevator to their destinations while the technicians were resolving the issue. When maintenance affects our guest's stays its very unfortunate. I believe the steps we take after learning of the issue to resolve any problems and show our guests that their safety and comfort are our number 1 priority sets us apart. I'd love to see you return and I look forward to providing a very nice stay for you in the future.

Sincerely,
Hunter R. W. Edelen

Our United flight was about an hour late from Denver and then it took over an hour to get a Princess Shuttle from the airportto the Captain Cook. When we approached the 1 desk clerk about 1:00am (about 20 people) he was overwhealmed, especially when some guests got to their rooms to find them not made up. First of all, I feel that for $324.00 this shouldn't have happened!
The meals that we ate there were good and the hotel was conviently located to most attractions.

Room Tip: Hopefully your flight doesn't get in late!

Dear rmorris9,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. We appreciate your review and we're pleased to see you enjoyed your stay. I apologize that check in time was longer than normal. I will speak with our team and work harder to provide a speedier check in especially during those late hours. I hope you enjoyed Alaska and we look forward to seeing you again.

Nice location. Near lots of restaurants. Our first room was next to elevator which caused us to hear a rumbling every two minutes. We asked to be moved and everything was fine after that. Food in restaurant was excellent. Breakfast food in cafe off the lobby was fine but expect to wait for service. Lots of Princess tour buses stay here. Hotel was sold out the night we stayed here and people lined up in lobby to eat breakfast both days.

Room Tip: Ask for a high room facing mountains.

Dear LeverettGirl,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. We appreciate your review. Sorry about the early noise. Very nice to see that we were able to find you a very quiet and comfortable room. You traveled a long from New Hampshire and we really appreciate you spending time in Alaska. Take care and we hope to see you again one day.

My partner have stayed in many very nice hotels all over the world. This was the 2nd to
the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. Here is why it was bad-
l. No one knew anything and didn't always admit they didn't
2. Lost our luggage for the first day we were there.
3. Bathroom had coffee on the floor yellow stain around the tub and water and
the drain was plugged. It took until l0:00 at night before the 2 housekeepers came
to clean the bathroom and then they sprayed it with disinfectant which smelled.
4. The room wasn't ready until after3:00.and we had to do alot of waiting around
so the guy at the desk could find out why our room wasn't ready.
5. The worst was not being to locate our luggage and no real apology for losing it.
6. The heating system didn't work very well.
7. They said we would have a beautiful view of the fireworks from our room. I stayed up
to see some vague lights too far away to enjoy.
8. I asked Hunter if we could get anything complimentary because of all the problems and
he reluctantly said o.k. we could have one breakfast. Come to find our Silver Sea already
had a free breakfast for 2 days for us. I asked for a couple beers to be brought to our
room the last night and he said o.k. but didn't send it. We paid more money than
the room was worth. Everything was old and the elevator didn't always work.
9. The Crowsnest Restaurant was great- more like we are used to. He should have
let us have our appetizers and 2 drinks comped but he didn't
l0. No safe in the room and the safe deposit box at the desk was too small for the crysal sculpture I had just bought from one of the nice gift shops. I had to carry it around with me.

Room Tip: Stay at the Hilton or anywhere else. shop in the gift shops though- they are verygood.

Dear 621uye,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. I do appreciate you letting us the know the areas that we need improvement. Your room was ready upon arrival but per your request we looked for a higher floor thus causing a delay. Your luggage was stored in our secure area. Upon dropping it off with our bell staff you were given a claim ticket to claim your luggage upon check in. I do apologize that were not satisfied with your stay. I had multiple meetings with you regarding your stay and I felt we were doing everything we could to help. I am learning every day how to be a better employee and look forward to growing daily. Thank you for your feedback and I hope you find better travels in the future.

Sincerely,

Stayed for two nights before fun and fishing down on the Kenai. One-of-a-kind ambiance, very comfortable bed, awesome views of the mountains (and Inlet on the other side) and extremely helpful and friendly staff.

And the food is fantastic. The Katchemak Bay oysters at Fletcher's were delicious and the gnocci was world-class. Killer views from the Crow's Nest, always one of the best restaurants in Anchorage.

Room Tip: The higher the floor, the better the view. Mountain side gets a bit of city noise when the window i...

Dear jcbi,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. Very very nice review and it was a pleasure to provide such a great stay. I love the oysters as well and the pizza is great. I hope you had a blast fishing down on the Kenai. I know the reds were swarming down there and the bear activity has been great for anyone looking to see a bear in the wild. Alaska already misses you guys and we can't wait to see you again.

The Good:
Facilities were basically nice and staff polite.

THE BAD:
Stayed 2 nights prior to picking up Princess land tour. Informed clerk at front desk at 10 AM first morning that toilet in room was not flushing human waste products away completely. Clerk said it will be taken care of promptly. Arrived back at room at 4 PM to take nap after walking all over Anchorage and the good museum. Room was not made up and toilet was not fixed. Called front desk and asked for issues to be addressed after 6 PM so I could take nap. Just fell asleep when door is knocked on by maintenance man to fix toilet. Man worked on toilet for 30 minutes. Got back in bed, closed eyes and maid service knocked on door to make up room. Sent them away. Lay down again when a second maintenance man knocked on door to repair toilet. Told him it was already addressed. Could not get back to nap. To add insult to injury, toilet was never fixed (disgusting). Spoke to manager. He offered $20.00 towards breakfast the next day. The first day we ate a decent breakfast across street for $9.00 each. The breakfast at hotel was 50% more and food was prepared poorly. Recommending to friends arriving next week they change to another hotel.
