“Do not believe good reviews - Read history of reviews before booking!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2010

We began researching places to stay in Anchorage in May and saw the many glowing reviews for Anchorage Downtown B&B on Tripadvisor. After reading 4 or 5, we thought it sounded great so we booked rooms for our stay in August. Big Mistake!

If you go back to reviews in July 2009 you will see the real condition of the property. (In fact, the real condition of the property is also revealed in older reviews too). The reviews from June and August of this year are also on the mark. Even though the management of Anchorage Downtown B&B claims that the pictures from the June review are not of the B&B and/or are pictures of a “private” area, they are consistent with the ones we took (attached to this review) when we toured guest areas of the place.

We really find it difficult to believe that the people who wrote the glowing reviews for this property actually stayed there. Like the reviewer in August, we also left without staying at the property even though the rooms were paid for. My family was disgusted with the mess, clutter, and lack of cleanliness!

I’d believe my eyes rather than the comments made by the people giving the B&B high marks.

The fence was so overgrown with trees and shrubs that we couldn't see the house from the street or find the house number. The walkway and stairs had a lot of debris. We could see in the front window that the house hadn't been picked up for quite some time. Our rooms were in the basement, which smelled musty when we opened the door. We were told there was bread in the freezer and juice in the refrigerator for our breakfast. It didn't give the impression of cleanliness so we left without staying.

Simple , country like, rustic charm with a very warm family. A good walk into town along a scenic path. A B&B with history.

The reviews from Trip Advisor as well as Marty's link were good so we booked the place. It was messy to begin with from the garden appearances, very overgrown. The kitchen when we entered through the back door was extremely cluttered and that was where we were expected to make our own breakfast which only muffins in a tin were provided. You could open the small door into the fridge to grab an old banana or a kiddie pack of juice. The living room was so crowded with junk that even the daughter had to perch on her piano bench to watch TV. There was nowhere to sit and there was a note from Mary asking that we don't sit in there (as if we could) because of the guests below. The whole place looked like it came from the "Hoarders" TV show. Even our bedroom had stuff belonging to them in the closet. Maybe the other rooms were better but this "Private room in the main house with shared bath" was disgusting and really needs to be investigated. I feel bad writing this as the children are so sweer but I hate to have people book this up thinking they are going to have a wonderful experience and get what we got.

These photos are not pictures of our B&B, which is clearly pictured on our web page and video.
In addition to B&B, we provide private quarters for extended stay and long-term stay guests. Unfortunately, these guests intruded into the private quarters of others to take these photos. Due to privacy laws and consideration for guests, we cannot discuss the matter further. We are however saddened that this invasion of privacy occurred.

We recently stayed in the Studio Suite. The bed was awful - old, smelly, and extremely saggy in the middle. The linens and towels smelled like mildew and were stained from years of use. The TV was not functional as the cable box did not have the parts to be hooked up with. Judging by the dust on the remote, it probably has been that way for a while. The "breakfast" consisted old tea, sugary cereal and an organic oatmeal in cup (add water) that had expired in 2008 and 2007, respectively.
I wish I could give a more positive review, but based on the above, I can not. The location is perfect and very convenient to everything, i.e., bike trails and downtown. If Marty would ensure that the Studio Suite was cleaner with fresh smelling linens, a bed that doesn't sink in the middle, and a working TV for when you just want to relax, this would be a great little B&B.

Gracious hostess and daughters provided wonderful tips on shopping, eating and local color. Homey rooms were spacious with comfortable beds and fluffy quilts - lots of Alaskan artwork and family antiques added a special touch. We enjoyed a healthy, fulfilling continental breakfast - great muffins, fruits, cereals, coffees and juices. The locations was terrifuic for running on the coastal trail and the safe neighborhood made our walk downtown enjoyable. We enjoyed the yard with lots of trees and Fall colors, and watching sunsets on the ocean only a couple blocks away. Highly recommend.

Unfortunately, I must agree with several other reviewers. I have been in B&Bs all over the world and have NEVER, even in the remotest of places, had accommodations as dirty and unkempt as this. Cats had the run of the house and the urine smell in the badly stained hallway carpet was overpowering. Although our room had an ionizer, the smell was unavoidable there as well. Our beds were never made during our 3 night stay yet there was a sign on the lamp stating that a daughter of the host had made the beds and would appreciate a tip. The room obviously had not been vacuumed for some time as there was a layer of cat hair behind the beds. The kitchen was dark and messy; the "hearty continental" breakfast was a "help yourself "affair of muffins, cereal, rotten fruit, and juice/coffee/tea. There really was no place to sit and eat. But, frankly, you wouldn't want sit in the kitchen anyway as it was not a very welcoming place. The living room was "off limits” (per a note in the kitchen) as there were “”guests downstairs”. (Pray tell, what were we??) Consequently, when we were in the house (which we tried to avoid except for sleeping) we were "confined" to the bedroom. The TV didn't work and our "hostess" was no where to be found. In fact, she made herself largely invisible during our stay. I could go on and on about the conditions but I think the message is loud and clear.
We booked this B&B after reading on the website that it was "Recommended by Frommer's as an "exceptional downtown B&B". Frankly amazed that it would receive such a recommendation, I checked the Frommer website upon our return. There is NO mention of "Raspberry Meadows" at all, least of all such a glowing recommendation! This is certainly misleading advertising and should be corrected. Our recommendation: this WAS NOT an exceptional B&B and should be avoided.
