“Great for the kids!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2013

We stayed at Walkabout with our young children for 2 nights and found it excellent! Our hosts were very accommodating, and although we had to change rooms for the second night (which we already knew about) they were very helpful and the rooms were both clean and comfortable. There is a bit of sharing of facilities involved depending on the room you're staying in, and breakfast is with all the guests upstairs (there might have been 10-15 guests for breakfast while we were there) is was actually nice to chat with other travellers over breakfast. And the food was lovely. The hosts were very helpful with our young kids, and there is a huge excellent playground/park within walking distance just around the corner. Would definitely recommend to families as they have everything you need! Thanks for a lovely stay!!

My sister and I stayed for four days at the Walk About while she conducted a workshop. It was comfortable, clean, and conveniently located. The breakfast was great with homemade rhubarb sauces and a variety to fit everyone's taste.

Our hosts were friendly and helpful as well as interesting. The other guests were just as interesting. I will stay there again when I return to Alaska which I hope is soon!

Room Tip: Take rain gear and slippers or flip flops to wear in the house.

I need to agree with Soozee and emphasize that this place feels like a nice hostel as opposed to a more "intimate" B&B that we might be used to.

We were contacted by one of the hosts and asked if we would mind switching to a room with a shared bathroom (due to a double-booking on their part). Since we were only staying one night we didn't figure that it would be a big deal; I though we'd be sharing with another couple. We weren't told that we'd be staying in an adjoining house with at least three other people (all using the same bathroom and common room - which one guest fell asleep in making it impossible to use). We were unaware of how many people were actually staying here until breakfast the next morning, and I'd say there were at least fifteen guests. While the hosts were friendly and accommodating and even gave us a 10% discount for switching rooms, the actual price came out to only a little less than one of the nicer hotels we'd stay at later on in our trip.

On the positive side, they did have free laundry facilities which were great, as well as day bicycle use.

We'd just like to people to realize that you'll most likely be staying here with A LOT of other people. If you're fine with that then you'll enjoy it!

Dear Reader:
We are disappointed with this review. If you are taking the time to read this message let me just say our goal is that you have a very comfortable bed, a sense of privacy, a great fully cooked meal and helpful information for your travels. At the same time, we are not a hotel and most people stay at B&Bs so they can interact with the guests. If at any time, during your stay with us, you have a problem we can only help you if you inform us while you are here. It does neither of us much good for you to tell us “everything is fine” and write a review later in which you are not happy because we did not meet your needs. So, we ask, if you choose to stay with us, don't wait to tell us your needs.

Our 2 night stay couldn't have been better. Hosts and breakfast were excellent. 10 min walk into main downtown. Main Museum was really worth their recommendation. Had trouble finding any grocery store nearby. The room was really dark to keep out the light evening (sunset was 11.38 pm). Laundry facilities at $1 per wash were brilliant. We're returning there in a few days.

Room Tip: We stayed in Alaska room. Very homely.

We were 3 couples staying in the annex home prior to a cruise. Found it very clean, quiet, and enjoyed all the ammenities it had to offer. Breakfast in the day room was great, with lots of good choices, including reindeer sausage, sourdough waffles, and fresh stewed rhubarb. Scott even transported us in his van to the train station in the wee hours of the morning so we could go on to Seward and begin our cruise.

Room Tip: Annex is a great location for large families or friends traveling together.

It does feel a bit like a hostel - shoes off at the door, sign up for breakfast, bike hire by arrangement! We were in the 'Australian' room which is off the family lounge, and this might have felt a bit uncomfortable and we feared for the noise. In the event, we went off for an evening meal, had an early night and left early for the plane, so we weren't really bothered, and it was lovely and quiet.

It is a faff though carting cases up the outside stairs, then taking off shoes to get them to your room. No idea how handy it is for town, as we never got there! There are only two parking spaces, not sure what we would have done if both had been taken.

It served the purpose, and the staff we saw were friendly and left us a nice pack up breakfast (although oddly with hard boiled eggs in - that was a first!).

I suspect we brought the average age up considerably, but I didn't really see or hear any other guests. The room was fine - if a little cramped.

This review appears to be filled with backhanded compliments...thanks for saying the room was lovely and quiet and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately, several things are misrepresented...it is not a "bike hire" we provide the bikes free and with parking front and back we can park at least six cars.

We spent four days at the Walkabout B&B and had a very relaxing time, we atyed in the Piano room which was spacious and very comfortable. Hosts were very friendly and extremly helpful spending lots of time sharing experiences over breakfast. If you are leaving early a breakfast pack is prepared for you which was great for that early morning train trip. All in all had a lovely stay and would recommend.
