“Would not go back”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

We arrived late-early morning, so I do give them credit for being available for us to check in that late. Especially considering that as the review states below, the check-in "desk" is in the living area of their home. Very awkward. He even "shhh"ed us so that we wouldn't wake up his children. The motel is older, quite in need of paint/repair, and the room was very basic, definitely not recently updated as the website states, and was just very bascially surface clean. (was in need of deep cleaning badly). In addition, the hotel rooms are behind their home where you get a great view the mess that is in their backyard. They are very near a nice river (walking distance) that was a joy to visit and walk around. It was a cheap place to stay...that's the only other positive thing we can say. Would not recommend.

Found this hotel online, we were looking for a place to stay for one night on our way from Denali to Seward. I couldn’t find it on Trip Advisor at all to read any reviews. The picture of the outside of the hotel made me leery, but it was a good price for the area and the website touts newly remodeled rooms, so I figured it couldn’t be too bad. Should have listened to the part of me that hesitated!
I don't know when the rooms were "newly remodeled" but it didn't look recent. The room we were in had dark paint, but there were several spots on the walls that were gouged and had white paint (or maybe drywall?) showing. The heating element along the front wall was filthy, didn't look like it had been cleaned in a long time! The bedspread was checkered thin fabric in a quilt style, and seams were open/ripped in several spots on it. A piece on the decorative spindle on the bed was missing. There was a door for an adjoining room, the peephole in the door was removed and replaced with balled up paper.
It did have some good points to it. There was DirecTV in the room (the box was taped up, but at least it had one...several places we stayed at that were much nicer didn't have a TV), a microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker, and it included continental breakfast - when you check in you get coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and get to pick 3 items per person from items including yogurt, fruit, soda, water, cookies. The strange part when we checked in was the office is in their home, but we saw no indication that it was their home until we walked in the “office” door and were practically in the kitchen. Felt very awkward to walk in on them making supper!
The room was mostly clean besides the heating element mentioned above, but there was a pair of underwear & socks left in the bathroom when we got there (not ours – gross!). The shower was small but manageable, and shampoo & body wash was provided (but no conditioner, as was the case in most places we stayed in Alaska). There's no air conditioning, not sure if that's normal for Alaska. It was very warm the day we got there and it was near 80 in the room, only way to cool it down was to open the door (no screen). As a plus there was a box fan in the room.
The location was convenient and easy to find, right next to the highway, with a gas station next door. I wouldn’t go back; you can likely find something for not a lot more that is much nicer!
