While staying at the Willawaw National Forest Campground a few days ago, we discovered the nature trail and fish viewing platform on the edge of the campground (no fee if accessed from the separate parking lot from the campground). The river runs beside the Portage-Whittier highway and is a spawning habitat for salmon in the fall. Educational signs are posted at the viewing platform to explain the significance of so many salmon nesting in the creekbed below. The nature trail is well marked and maintained, winding beside the river and through beautiful thick forest. This is an easy trail for family members of all ages. There are bear warnings posted, however. Although we did not encounter a bear, we did see some fresh bear scat on the trail.
