We decided to take the Hilton’s New Year package this year. Two rooms in the western wing. Had the grandkids with us. Staff did a great job, best location ever for us, downtown, to view the fireworks, also very close to the heart of Anchorage and the central park area where all the festivities took place. No question, just short walk to perhaps 70% of the highest rated quality cuisine restaurants in the city. Hot tub, swimming pool, workout area, were super, grandkids gave this an A plus. Been in the Hilton a thousand times but last time I stayed there was perhaps 58 years ago. We live in midtown.
I was pleasantly surprised at how well the complex is maintained today. Rooms were very quiet as well, particularly then, with all the drunks returning at three in the morning. The four majors in downtown are the Hilton, Cook, Sheraton and Marriott. The Hilton is by far the shortest walk to most of the stuff to see and do in downtown. Sheraton and Marriott are the furthest. Sheraton is a nice hotel too, except for the last year now they have had major labor problems with pickets everywhere. Three times in recent years we have did the Hotel Captain Cook for our winter getaway. Haven’t stayed in the Marriott, but our kids like it. Cook is probably the largest complex of them all, excellent hotel, but their swimming pool isn’t very good for the little ones, and it is too far a walk to the center of activities if it is cold out.
Even though I am still unhappy with Hilton for doing away with the name of its predecessor, the famous “Anchorage Westward”, after they promised to keep the name, we had such and good time and they treated us so well, they will be our hotel of choice next year.
