“Ghost Adventures”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2012

We stayed here looking for a historic Anchorage adventure. There were few other guests when we stayed and had some fun experiences: footsteps in the hall, tapping on the walls, and some moving curtains. We can't wait to go back!

Beyond the permanent residents of the hotel- it was a fabulous place to stay. The rooms are nice and cozy (although next time I want to try a suite), with a blend of modern technology and true to it's past feel. There are pictures of 'old time' Anchorage all around. The lobby and bar area feel like a walk back in time.

I loved this hotel and can't wait to stay there again! The only downside was it's proximity to a local bar (across the block) which was pretty loud until 2am. I think if you stayed in the even numbered rooms you wouldn't have to worry about that!

Room Tip: Ask for a even numbered room (away from the bar street). We requested an 'active' room for G...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are glad you excited to come back and found us to be a Fabulous place to stay! We are proud to be the only hotel in Anchorage on the National Register of Historic Places. We take pride in making you feel like you are taking a step back in time. We are working with our neighbors (the bar) on keeping the noise level down. We look forward to your return and trying out one of our Junior Suites.

My wife and I recently travelled to Anchorage for a meeting, and we extended our stay for 4 days to explore Alaska. The hotel was terrific. Terri and her staff were all very helpful. The breakfast in the morning was a real treat to get our day started just right. We love "historic" hotels, full of character and ambiance, and this one did not disappoint us! The location in town was convenient to many local restaurants, and parking was close to the hotel. We drove to Telkeetna and took a plane tour of Mount McKinley on K2 (the photos are amazing), we toured Seward and the Alaska SeaLife Center (amazing), and went dog mushing in Alyeska, among many other things. What memories Terri and her staff help provide! My only regret(s), we didn't see a moose, and we need to return in the summer to we can take the train and see more of Alaska!

We are so happy to hear that you had a Great Alaskan Adventure! It is wonderful to have a staff of great people who genuinely care about every guest. Thank you for sharing your photos and review. We were lucky this month and had few moose hanging around downtown. We look forward to hosting you both again in the summer!

Visiting Anchorage for the ceremonial start of the Iditarod Dog Sled Race, we couldn't have picked a better location. When we arrived, the friendly staff printed a schedule of activities for start day and shared tips on good places to view the action. They were right on all counts and it was easy to take part in everything as the hotel was just around the corner from the start line and the crazy Running of the Reindeer later in the day. When we returned to the hotel a couple days later, someone came into the breakfast room to announce there was a moose just around the corner. Sure enough, a mother and calf were grazing on trees right on 4th Ave!

Dear Iditarod Winner,
Thank you for staying with us. We are happy to hear you enjoyed the Fur Rondy Festivities and the Ceremonial Start of the Iditarod right outside our front door. We take pride in our service and are pleased we were of assistance to you. We can Thank our accountant for sharing the excitement of the moose and calf walking the streets of downtown. I ran out to the fire escape and snapped a few photos myself. Thank you again, we look forward to hosting you in the not too distant future.
Warmest regards,
Terri

Coming into the lobby was like walking back in time in old town Anchirage. My husband and I spent a lot of time sitting by the fire. The Belgian waffle breakfast buffet was a nice surprise. The staff were above the normal helpful level. Our room was warm cozy and clean. To be able to walk out the door and watch the dog sled races, knowing if we got cold our room was right there, and to be less than a block from shopping was so convenient. Thank you all for a lovely stay.

This was one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had (and I travel >100k miles per year). Terri and her staff were fantastic. They had terrific advice for getting out and about, they helped me to ship stuff back home, and every staff member knew my name right from the first day. Terri even extended breakfast hours for a few late risers amongst the other guests. The hotel itself has all the modern amenities you'd expect, but retains its old world character. Of course the breakfast is a nice touch. And it's walking distance from everything. Great place!

Room Tip: Quiet rooms face away from the street.

We stayed here for one night in June at the conclusion of a three-week journey through BC and AK. Both the City of Anchorage and the Historic Anchorage Hotel were unexpected pleasures.

We had no expectations for Anchorage and assumed it would be simply a way-station prior to our return flight. Instead, we spent a thoroughly enjoyable 24 hours in town and wished that we had budgeted another day. Anchorage is a lively and interesting city with plenty to do and see, and this hotel is right in the center of everything. The location couldn't be more convenient, especially for the Segway tours which commence across the street. Give them a try -- it's a blast to glide around the city on them.

The hotel is indeed "historic" and some might find it "dated." To us, the quirky charms were irresistible. It really feels like you are in a movie from the 1940's. We had a Junior Suite on the top floor -- it's very roomy with a nice view of the neighborhood. No air-conditioning, but a huge standing fan was provided and it was more than enough to keep us cool on a warm night (the fan also added to the retro feeling). It's a lively neighborhood, but that's part of the charm (I will concede that we were there on a weeknight, so we didn't experience Saturday night revelry). We kept the windows open and had no difficulties. I'm a native New Yorker, though, and I love the sounds of the city.

The Historic Anchorage Hotel provides a unique atmosphere (and free breakfast!) at an unbeatable price. We will definitely stay again if we return to Anchorage.

I travel to Anchorage often and over the the last 30 years have stayed in most of Anchorages hotels. The Historic Anchorage Hotel is where I stay on almost every trip now. Terri, Jessica and the rest of the staff are amazing! Just spent 8 grueling days in Anchorage working, it was nice to be able to come 'home' every night.
The bar across the street can be rowdy, you might want to avoid those rooms.
