“An Unexpected Surprise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

We went to Duke's Chowder House after getting a recommendation from our hosts at a nearby B&B. We are foodies and were kind-of leary after reading some of the online reviews but tried it since we were hungry and in the area. What we got was an unexpected surprise.

Pros:
- Our hosts recommended we try the 3 course dinner so we did. We ordered the spinach salad, lobster chowder, and better than Mahi tacos. We didn't know what to expect but the portion sizes were huge for the price. The spinach salad was very good, the lobster chowder was hot and had large pieces of lobster, and the tacos included two regular-sized tacos. The fish inside the tacos was also fresh-tasting.
- We arrived late in the evening so it wasn't as busy but the service was very good. The server was prompt and was the one who recommended that we try the lobster chowder.
- The location is right across the street from Greenlake Park so the setting is relaxing. They also have a deck outside if the weather is nice.

Cons:
- We can't think of any cons. It's not a fine dining restaurant but instead, a casual place that serves good food. It was suggested that we try their berry pie but we were so full after eating their meal (and that was splitting the three course dinner) that we didn't have room for the dessert.

“A big disappointment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

A group from work - 10 of us - visited the Seattle (Fairview Ave) Duke's after hearing glowing recommendations from others. It really didn't live up to the hype, at least for this one diner. While the chowder sampler was tasty, the temperature was lukewarm at best. The chef let his tasty salmon in the salmon sandwich wither under an onslaught of spices - as if he was trying to hide something. My taste buds were burning after just one bite. (Another American restaurant caught up in the "chipotle is God" craze). The sweet potatoe fries were 1/4 to 1/3 were overdone or looked like they came from the bottom of the freezer bag - little chips and bits. The service was pretty bad. It started with poor accommodations for our group - separate tables even though we told them hours in advance what the final count would be. It was difficult even to get a water glass refilled at times. Then all the entrees came out and it was "auction time" - who's got the crab cakes? Who's having the stuffed shrimp? Not one order went to a diner without a call-out asking whose it was. Though I didn't have dessert, the menu looked uninspired - the usual "chocolate volcano something" and a couple other items. An authentic key lime pie would have been nice. The wine list by the glass was American - with one exception that they were out of. The view is of a marina. Great if you like to look at big boats. Overall, I'd say Duke's was disappointing.

“Salmon & chowder to die for”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012

We make a point of dining here at every opportunity - there is simply NO place that can stand up to Duke's - their chowder should be world famous....if it isn't already and the Salmon dishes are to die for - I can see why there is a wait and its best to call ahead and reserve. The service is EXCELLENT and the staff there only contribute to the wonderful food - DUKE'S - the first place that comes to mind when we want a beautiful meal.

“Impressive!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2012

Very nice setting in an active marina. Enjoy the surroundings with excellent service and a distinctive seaside menu. Famous for their chowders.....try the sampler of 5 different flavors. Nice array of tapas, which the crab artichoke dip tops the list. The fresh catch (halibut) fish and chips (the test of any good restaurant) was A+. Very clean facilities, oh, and did I say the service was excellent?!
