More like a non-red-meat restaurant than a vegetarian restaurant as some have implied--though vegetarians can eat very very well here indeed--the Sitka and Spruces menu emphasizes fresh and local in a way you might call sophisticated and yet holistic: unbelievably good bread, local cheeses, olives, pickled vegetables, mixed chiogga and purple beets on walnut puree, two orders of mussels in a white wine and parsnip broth, turkey rillettes with sliced smoked turkey--these are the foods we ordered.
And shared. And loved, because each was perfectly seasoned and balanced.
And ate with three bottles from a very considerate wine list.
If you're looking for steak frites or a burger, this restaurant isn't for you. If you don't know or care about the difference between seriously great bread and supermarket bread, this restaurant isn't for you. If wrecking ball high presentations are all that impresses you, then this restaurant isn't for you. If you prefer Coke with your lunch, this restaurant isn't for you.
And if you don't like to share dishes with others, then this restaurant really isn't for you. You'll end up like several of the reviewers here, complaining that the portions are too small because you conventionally expected one big plate that would be your personal entire meal, and that's not the concept here.
We ordered nine dishes, including three plates of bread (it really was to die for) and left so full that we skipped dinner even though we sat down to our table at noon straight up with empty tummies Does that sound like skimpy portions? And the food portion of our bill was just a little over $100, under $30 each. Compared to Denny's, expensive. But for the quality of the food we enjoyed? Not at all.
Diner, educate yourself. Sitka and Spruce may not be your kind of restaurant, but it doesn't change the fact that this restaurant excels at what it does.
We'll definitely return!
p.s. The location inside the scenic little Melrose Market is a big plus. I brought home cheeses from The Calf and the Kid and freshly made Toulouse sausages from the butcher.
p.s.s. Reservations available on Open Table.
