The Arctic Club is a hotel that is out of the ordinary. Situated near Pioneer Square and within walking distance of many attractions it stands out because of its unique heritage, meticulous restoration and comfortable accommodations.
This 1917 home to a club founded by Alaska and Arctic explorers and exploiters, it carried on as a private club until the early 1970's. Kudos to the Spokane company that carefully and artfully restored it to its glory over two years. Now in its fifth year of operation it evokes a bygone era both in its public rooms and its richly appointed rentals, decorated with original photographs and art and period furniture. The bed was one of the most comfortable we have ever slept in and the bedding was top level. Also worth noting are the ornate ballroom and the hotels meeting rooms. When you see them you will understand why this is one of the top locations for weddings, conferences and other special events in Seattle.
This would be our five star pick except that the Arctic Club has an awkward entrance due to the City's requirement that it use its original Cherry Street address when really fronts on 3rd Avenue. The other problem, for some, will be the immediate area, which is certainly transitional and has a good share of street people.
Don't let the immediate environs deter you from trying this piece of history and great comfort. You can always stay at a chain hotel another time.
