Cafe Yarmarka is a hidden little spot deep in the bowels of the Pike Place Market off the beaten path and away from the tourist lines at other eateries on the main street. I was not familiar with Russian food but decided to try it. I ordered pelmeni which are small dumplings stuffed with a mixure of beef and pork. They were like fluffy clouds dipped in ambrosia - a light onion sauce. They were so delicious that they were inhalable. I wasn't too adventuresome to try all the side dishes but opted for sour cream thick as soft ice cream. They have posted some wonderful soups, borsch, potato and cucumber. Also listed was venegret (a salad), cabbage rolls, and pierogi galor. It might be more fun to sit at the counter and watch them cook but I sat at a small table with a large map of Russia under glass which I studied in detail while I wolfed down my hearty lunch. Remind me the next time I plan a travel adventure to include Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikisstan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Yarmarka is not a place you would like to impress a date with as it is more of a lunch counter, but the ambiance although limited is unique.
