We found 13 Coins online and after reading positive reviews here and on other sites, decided to have our first dinner in Seattle here. We arrived and loved the retro look and vibe! It is great! Unfortunately, that's where the positives end for us.
There were about 3 other tables of people and a handful at the counter when we arrived, but we still waited quite a while for a server to show up, and then about 10 minutes for drinks to arrive. Okay, a little annoying, but no big deal.
After another long wait for our meals (we both ordered the Crab Eggs Benedict), the food arrived. As he was cutting into his meal, my husband discovered a thick, curly hair (about 4 inches long) in his food. We waited for the server to come back to check on us, but she did not. My husband eventually flagged down the manager and showed him the hair. I was surprised at the manager's reaction. He basically said, "Oh." and asked if my husband wanted a new one. Having worked in the food service industry, I expected an apology, or at the very least, a semblance of some sort of care. He didn't seem to be bothered or embarrassed by the fact that customers were being served food with hair in it.
Not wanting to have another long wait for his food (especially since I was now almost done with my meal), my husband asked if a sandwich would be a quicker option. The manager responded by saying, "Anything you order will be quick," which made it sound like he was going to have the kitchen fast track it or something. But the kitchen at 13 Coins is out in the open, and we were sitting right in front of it. So we saw the manager put in the order, and disappear, and then 10 minutes later, we saw our server begging the cooks to start making the sandwich. A real manager would have made sure the food was being made, especially after promising us a fast turnaround.
Eventually, the sandwich arrived. The whole situation made us very uncomfortable, and made us feel like we were inconveniencing the staff. When the bill arrived, I was really surprised to see that my husband had been charged for his sandwich. After the first meal with the hair, and then the long wait for the replacement meal (with cooks refusing to make the food right in front of us), I would have thought that it would have been comped or at least a few dollars discount.
The food was okay, but the service in this place was so poor--from the slow server to the disinterested manager to the surly cooks--that I would never return, and would never recommend this place to anyone.
