“Great Cause, outstanding service and food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013 via mobile

Seattle has so many wonderful places to eat. Farestart was no exception. Five of us, including a five-year-old, all ordered different dishes. So we sampled a variety of menu items. One favorite was the veggie Reuben. Our little one had a special grilled cheese sandwich and chocolate ice cream. Nicole, our waitress was outstanding. If I ever return to Seattle and that restaurant I will ask for her. Check out the place online for more information on what makes it unique.

“A Seattle Secret--A Great Restaurant With a Purpose”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

One of the wonderful things about Seattle is the opportunity to dine with the city's leading chefs at a restaurant that makes a difference in so many people's lives. Fare Start is a program that gets people off the streets and into productive work in the food industry. In a 16-week training program the students are taught the restaurant business from the front of the house to the kitchen. Along with that, they are given housing help, taught life skills, given job placement help, and individual help to get them back into the community and a new life. It has been very successful and many graduates are working in restaurants in the area.

On Thursday nights there is Guest Chef Night. A chef from a local high-end restaurant donates his or her time to plan a menu, mentor the students, and supervise the preparation and service of the dinner. The meal is by reservation online at: http://www.farestart.org/restaurant/guestchef/index.html. The menu is prix-fixe at a very reasonable amount and includes three courses. There is always a vegetarian option. Each week it is different, according to the chef's wishes. You can go online and see the upcoming chefs and their menus, usually about six weeks in advance. I have been many times and have never been disappointed. The food is beautifully and professionally plated and always delicious. Wine and beer are available for an extra cost.

Volunteers from the community, usually companies or other organizations, serve the meal. The restaurant is lovely and there is a festive feel about the meal. Frequently the chefs circulate among the diners. Usually there is a graduation ceremony which is also inspiring.

The dinner is not really a place for young children since there are no other menu options but next door they serve a daily lunch, also prepared by the students but without the visiting chefs. For a truly unique Seattle experience you won't go wrong with dinner at Fare Start.

“Thursday Guest Chef Night-Reserve Ahead.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

A wonderful example of Seattle restaurant ingenuity to solve a social issue. We chose a night with a signature seafood menu from a successful local chain. While we enjoyed the double appetizers with a tasty main, all three parts featured shrimp, which made the meal a bit heavy. This is a non-profit training restaurant, with volunteer service staff, so plan on 2 to 2.5 hours. They introduce students and graduates around 7:00 pm. The graduations are very poignant, but may slow and cool your entrees. Wine and beer offerings are interesting and market-priced.

“Great and Charitable Concept”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

I've been to this restaurants many times, and and am happy to make this my first entry to TripAdvisor. The concept to train those that are the most of needy, is a humble, if not necessary idea. The food is exceptional, and the staff go above and beyone any expectation. I am vegan, and have never been denied any requests. If you ever venture into the Seattle, do your mind, body and soul a favor, and support this restaurant. Again, great concept Fare Start Restaurant!!

“Proves that Great Food and Good Deeds are Compatable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

One of those rare treats in life when everyone wins ... fantastically memorable food, a great environment and wonderful service combine to make a more than memorable experience. To say nothing of supporting the well designed training for homeless, etc. An ABSOLUTELY not-to-be-missed dining experience.
