Owner description: The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (locally known as the Ballard Locks) is a waterway system that connects the saltwater of the Puget Sound to the fresh water of the Ship Canal, which sits about 20 feet above sea level.  Boats enter the locks, the gates close and the water rises or falls to the level of the destination waterway.  Watching boats pass through the locks, exploring the 7 acres of botanical gardens and looking for fish on the fish ladder is fun and free entertainment that draws locals and tourists alike.

“Chittenden Locks great for everyone”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2012

My husband and I were driving from North Cascades National Park to Renton as a base to then visit Mt. Rainier and wanted to see something in Seattle. I picked the locks and it was great! My husband found it really interesting; how the system worked, the workers as they instructed the boaters on tying off, and the boats. All sizes and kinds of boats and yachts. Then the fish ladder is there for the migrating salmon. Plus, at the entry of the complex is the Carl S. English Botanical Garden where you can eat a picnic lunch, stroll and relax. And it is all free. A great place to relax, be outside and great for families.

“Good experience for whole family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2012

The busy locks give a good idea of how locks work. The fish ladders have viewing windows, so people can see the salmon swimming.

“Interesting”

Perfect place for kids (lots to learn, plenty of room to run around and fresh air). And it's free - except parking. Great little museum/info/gift-shop too!

“Salmon Are Running”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2012

The locks and grounds are a wonderful experience. We went into the fish ladder and saw the salmon run up close...very nice. As we were leaving the van load of chilcren were decending.. so the exit was perfectly timed.. Worth the trip.
Thank You

“Nice place to visit while in Seattle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2012

Great place to visit. We had about 4 hours to spare so made a quick drive to the locks. Great weather and very enjoyable to sit awhile and watch the boats go by.
