Owner description: The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (locally known as the Ballard Locks) is a waterway system that connects the saltwater of the Puget Sound to the fresh water of the Ship Canal, which sits about 20 feet above sea level.  Boats enter the locks, the gates close and the water rises or falls to the level of the destination waterway.  Watching boats pass through the locks, exploring the 7 acres of botanical gardens and looking for fish on the fish ladder is fun and free entertainment that draws locals and tourists alike.

“Great freebie in Seattle!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2012

Has a great museum about the locks and you can watch all the boats and ships lock through. On the other side is a fish ladder where you can see the salmon travel upstream twice a year. Note if you are on a limited time crunch you can be trapped on the other side of the canal when the locks open and close. Keep valuables out of sight in your vehicles as there are lots of car prowlers. Parking is metered so watch your time. The botanical gardens are a great place to picnic and listen to bands during the summer.

“Dont miss in Seattle; need rental car to visit”

the gardens approaching the locks are fabulous, especially in spring and summer. You can really see how a lock systems works and walk and viewing is a very close up thing.

“The locks are must see for everyone...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2012

The very first time I visited Seattle my friends took me to the locks. I love it as much now as I did at my first vist. Bring your friends and your family, you won't be disappointed. If the salmon aren't running, watch how the engineers move boats from one level to the next coming or going. A little research about the salmon runs will make this trip a memorable one.

“FISH & CHIPS & WATER”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2012

Great way to chill on a hot day. Get fish & chips at the Lockspot & carry into the park. Sit by the locks and watch the action. Cool under the trees. Take a blanket & take a nap. Music in the park on Saturdays in the summer. Great salmon ladder.
