“Delicious bagels, warm atmosphere, and a friendly staff-the perfect start to the day.”
I stayed in the Packard building during my visit, where Eltana is located, so this was my go-to place most mornings. But I didn't come again and again out of obligation. I came again and again because the layout of the place is wonderfully warm and inviting with comfortable seating bar-style or at tables, the staff are just as warm and friendly, and the bagels are amazing. I'm not much of a bagel eater, but I have to agree with most of the other reviewers: the bagels at Eltana's are just the perfect blend of toasty on the outside, warm and soft on the inside, and seeded on both sides--which really does make the difference. Those bagels are extremely fresh, too: I had to catch an early flight, and saw the staff kneading away at 4:30, when I left. And there's no skimping on the spreads here: they lay it on so thick, you'll start wondering just how they piled on so much without going over the edge. The coffee refills were always free--and I did try to pay the second time I went up to ask for one, to no avail!
On the days I had time, I loved coming in early (they open at 6:00) and sitting at the long table with a book, where I got a great view through the large windows of the street scene in front. I only wish they would stay open a little later; they close at 16:00. The staff are very friendly and are happy to give you tips on how to get someplace, if you're visiting from out of town.
Eltana does offer catering services, and if you love your bagels, try to make it in on Tuesdays--Two for Tuesdays, where you get a second bagel free (although it's extra for the spread, but still). And if you didn't bring a book, try the crossword puzzle; the staff are happy to give you a copy!
