“Avoid the older section of property. It is like staying at a summer camp.”
This is a great location that is set off in the "woods" but also about a 10-minute walk from a major mall/shopping center, University Village. Unfortunately, there are really two conference center lodging experiences at Talaris, depending upon whether you stay in the old section or the new section of the facility. The new section is what I used for my quality ratings. The older section would receive the lowest ratings in each category. The new section has updated rooms, beds with headboards, air-conditioning, modest bathrooms with tub and shower (only a sliding door though), free wireless, and large windows. You could have an enjoyable stay in the newer section, and the dining, service, and cleanliness were of high quality. The older section, in my opinion, is like staying at a summer camp. There are large spider webs, mosquitoes and other bugs inside and outside of the rooms (bugs fly freely throughout the reception/lobby area too because they keep the door open). The beds in the older section don't have headboards and the mattresses were lumpy. I found dead bugs in my window sill, cobwebs on the light fixtures, and several mosquitoes waiting to pounce. The plumbing is also older, so don't be surprised by toilets that don't flush, leak, or by toilet seats with scratches and worn areas. The plumbing staff respond quickly though and are very friendly. The older section does have air-conditioning, large closets, and large suites. The suites have high ceilings, fireplaces, washer and dryer, kitchen, etc., but the decor is very dark, the rugs are stained, and I also found cobwebs on the light fixtures. I would recommend a stay here only if you are in the newer section. In short, the prices are reasonable, the service was pretty good, and the food was excellent. If you are hosting a group meeting and have any issues with the menu, don't speak directly to the chef. Go to the center staff since I found the chef to be a little temperamental. The staff were extremely helpful and very responsive to my concerns though, and I expect they will be updating the entire property in the near future.
