i stayed three nights, i was helped with everything i asked for help with, the staff at the reception were friendly and informative, the staff in the kitchen were kind and friendly too. it was clean, safe, with many different rooms for different modes of 'hang out'.

the hostel was RIGHT NEXT to where the bolt bus drops you off, (and where all the other busses seem to originate from) and so close to the market, i walked and cycled everywhere. they stored my bike safely in the basement too.

you can get two very cheap and beautiful bus rides east and have a coffee and slice of cherry pie in the twin peaks diner where it was filmed. awesome.

This is a perfect location for access to Link Light Rail from Airport, Bolt Bus, King St Train Station or bus transit centre. If you are planning to do what we did - arrive in the evening at the airport and catch the Link Light Rail into Seattle to stop overnight then catch the Bolt Bus out the next morning this is the perfect place to stop. Otherwise I would look for somewhere downtown.

We found the breakfast to be excellent - choice of coffee or tea, cereals, fruits, toast etc

The hostel was OK, but seemed like it needed some TLC and you would need to take the bus or train downtown from there.

Staff were OK but not the friendliest we'd met.

This hostel is very convenient located 1 min from the light rail station to Sea-Tac. Easy to catch a bus to and from downtown and surrounded by primarily Asian restaurants.
They provide a simple but nice breakfast which was surprising as we didn't expect much. The hostel is clean and safe.
Downside of our stay was the unfriendly and unhelpful staff. With check-in no explanation where we could find our room or even our room number. When asked what our room number was, the lady responded, like we could have know, "It's on the paper I just gave you"
It looked like we disturbed the staff in the middle of something and that we were a bother. Morning shift was the same thing so my assumption is that this is general practice.
All in all good value for money but don't expect a welcoming staff

When I booked this hostel I wasn't sure I'd be crazy about the neighborhood. I had read some things that made it sounded like it wasn't in the safest part of town. Sure there are homeless people around but they're everywhere in Seattle. They'll ask for change and go on their way. They don't hassle you at all. This hostel is in the perfect location for getting around. Buses and the light rail are just across the street. Amtrak is a block away. You couldn't be better situated. There is an awesome Asian grocery store within three blocks for really fresh produce. If you're in town for a game, both the baseball and football stadiums are about a five minute walk. I really liked this place. Excellent kitchen. Free breakfast in the AM. Staff was mostly helpful, sometimes they seemed a little more interested in whatever they were doing online. But for me, that was a really minor issue. If anyone asks I wouldn't hesitate to suggest this place for a stay.

Room Tip: I stayed in private room so I can't speak for the dorms. On top floor, very quiet.

The HI Seattle Hostel (aka American Hotel) is a good value in a convenient location for public transportation.

It is one block (under the Chinese archway on King Street) from the International (Asian) District transport hub, with connections to SEA airport via light rail, Bolt buses up and down the coast, Amtrak train station, and Seattle city and King county buses (in the transport tunnel).

The staff is very helpful with information about area sights and transportation, with free tourist maps at the desk.

The hotel itself is a rehabilitated transient hotel. The public areas (large modern kitchen, dining area, and lounge) are attractive. The rooms are small but functional, with lockers (bring your own lock or rent one at the desk) large enough for two carry-ons, but not a large suitcase. There are lights, fans, and electric outlets at each bedside.

The hallways appear a bit depressing but are well-lit and secure. There are several bathrooms along each hallway, the smaller ones for private use, and two larger ones for shared use.

Most important, there are new fire alarms and sprinklers throughout.

The hotel is shaped like the letter M, with the top facing the street. Lower number rooms face the back, and higher number rooms face the street. Traffic in the area is light, and noise was not a problem during my stay, even with an open window in our room.

If you are elderly or have mobility issues, the staff can reserve a lower bunk for you and will allow you to use the elevator (stairs are required for everyone else); but you will need to climb a flight of stairs in the entry, since the hostel begins one floor above the storefronts that are on street level (the hostel entry is itself a storefront).

There is a public parking lot directly across the street, and a mega grocery store (Uwajimaya) two blocks south (on the ground floor under the new apartment building). Refrigeration space is inadequate (the two refrigerators were stuffed to overflowing and therefore maintenance of a safe low temperature is doubtful), so don’t buy too many groceries at one time.

Foreigners may be surprised to see the number of street people (alcoholics, homeless, et al.) in the area, but that is a fact of life in most large American cities. I never felt in danger when walking in the area, but women may prefer to walk in groups after dark.

All in all, this is a well-maintained HI hostel, and I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Low numbers face the back, higher numbers face the street, but traffic noise was not a problem durin...

This was my first time to stay in a Hostel and it was an adventure to say the least. As a faithful hotel guest I rarely venture away from hotels. This time I did. The Hostel is located in the entrance of China town in Seattle. The area can be a little scary at night but for the most part if your there during day light hours its okay. I shared a room w/three other girls which was fun. The beds though are very thin and I had back problems after sleeping on them. There are lockers in the room (bring your own lock and key) to secure your valuables. The only thing I didn't like is the fact the housekeeper kept opening and leaving the window open while I was out. The staff is very nice but at times can be a bit rash..Other then those small minor things. The place is well worth the price and cleanness!!! I will stay there again. Close to Train, downtown attractions, etc.

Room Tip: No swimming pool nor fitness center. Get a room w/a high floor.

My friend and I stayed in the single gender room for two nights and the room was clean. The location was great sincea big bus stop is right across the street.
However, comparing to the other hostel I have been to in Mexico, the breakfast was very basic with the choice of just bread and instant oatmeal.
