After playing the violin for too many years, I'm not a huge fan of orchestras/symphony music. However, I have two little boys who ae ages 2.5 and 4 years old. We subscibe to the Tots series and attend a kids concert every other month.
These concerts run for 35-45 minutes and are very interactive. The performances include a skit/play with performers who tell a story via narration, song, dance and musical instruments. They also incorporate humor, call and response, and learning points. It makes the full experience engaging enough for both the adults and children. I often see kids on playdates, with parents, or with grandparents. My kids stay captivated throughout and it isn't painful for me.
Another plus, 30 minutes prior to the engagement the kids can have an hands on experience with various string instruments (with a volunteer), play games with other kids, color, read themed books provided.
