“A museum chronicling the Asian American immigrant experience in Seattle.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

This is a small museum located in the International District of Seattle. Comparable to the Chinatown Heritage Center in Singapore, this museum tells the story not only of Chinese, but also other Asian American immigrants which came across the oceans in search of a better life.

I would strongly advise any visitor to join one of the guided tours not only to be able to fully appreciate what this center can impart, but you’ll be able to access certain areas, normally off limits to the regular tourist. During my visit, I was fortunate enough that the tour was led by Mike, who if I’m not mistaken was a nephew of Wing Luke himself.

Take note that the places visited are not recreations, but actual preserved locations – such as an old Chinese general store, an old hotel/boarding house and family association headquarters.

“Definitely worth checking out!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

I came to see an exhibition of the work of furniture maker George Nakashima and stayed to enjoy the architecture, some sound installations, and a wonderfully organized exhibition of Asian Americans working in fashion and the garment trade. Some of the displays on stereotypes of Asian-Americans seemed a bit simplistic and conflated rapidly changes values from different eras into a monolithic attitude. But it was well intentioned. And the shop has a great selection of Hello Kitty merchandise if you have anyone in your life who is a fan.

“Great little museum.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

I've been to Seattle many times and finally made time to visit "The Wing". I'm so glad I did. The exhibit of clothing by Asian designers took me beyond Vera Wang and was stunning. I was aware of predjudice against Chinese and Japanese immigrants, but I learned how bad things really were for them. I was not aware of the problems and abuse encountered by immigrants from the Philippines and India. This is a fascinating place for history buffs and those interested in other cultures.

“Great Museum--must see in Seattle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

In my review of The Fairmount Olympic Hotel I note that this museum in Seattle's Chinatown/International District is a gem and worth the effort to either walk there (about 15 minutes) or take the free bus to it. An affiliate of the Smithsonian the Wing Luke is one of my regular stops on visits to Seattle because of its fascinating exhibits. On this trip I stopped in to see a fascinating exhibit of the work of George Nakashima a world class woodworker and architectural designer. While the museum is small it packs in many interesting shows which provide a unique and important perspective on the Asian Pacific American experience. One component of the museum not to be missed is its their tours. The specific tour I found most fascinating was its tour of the shop and tenement building that housed many new immigrants (this is in a building that is part of the museum itself). Finally there is also an excellent museum shop.

“Getting better all the time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

I recently went to an event featuring Asian clothing designers and it was very well done and interesting. As the museum matures, they are featuring more and more interesting exhibits and artists.
